FIT file too big (40Mb) for my activity : How can I add it in my Garmin Connect ?

(As requested by "BEN FIT"  I copy my post here for FENIX 7)

Good morning,

I currently use a Garmin FENIX 7X Sapphire.

I do the ultra-trail.
And so my outings can last between 10 hours and 145 hours.

1/
I noticed that the Garmin Connect APP limits the size of activity files to 25Mb.
Which corresponds to approximately 50 hours active (in light mode (without activating too many parameters))

I finished the TOR DES GEANTS 370km in Courmayeur in 143 hours and the file on my watch is 40Mb.
I don't know how to sync it with my Garmin Connect.

I have already contacted Garmin, who asks me to manipulate the file to delete measurements and transfer it to Strava to resynchronize it to Garmin Connect.
it does not work. “it’s a bit of DIY”

Does anyone have any ideas on how to sync my file?
I would like to analyze my track (timing/km in different zones)

2/
In ultra trail running, I also use the LiveTrack function so that my family and friends can follow me.
This is very useful when tracking in the mountains.
Well this LiveTRack is limited to 24 hours.
After 24 hours, I must restart the LiveTrack to receive a new tracking link and send this link to my family and friends.
My watch has a battery life of 86 hours and this LiveTRack is limited to 24 hours... :-(

I also contacted Garmin. but I have no response from them.

If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.
Thank you in advance for your help

  • Hello,

    I started my activity Sunday 10/09/2023 12h00

I charged my watch after ~65 hours ( in a base of life)

    I stopped my watch Saturday 16/09/23 11h35

It's an Ultra-Trail.  Why I stop my watch during the Trail, Why Restart a new trace.

How can I follow indications at each checkpoint with kilometers if I reset my watch !!

  • I charged my watch after ~65 hours

This is clearly where I’m missing something. When I put my watch on charge the activity is saved at that point. When I take it off charge I have to restart the activity. This occurs on Run, Trail Run, and Ultra Run activities

What am I doing wrong? I’d like to know so that I too can record a continuous activity while recharging the watch. As it stands I cannot get an activity to record continuously even while charging the watch.

I would be very grateful if you would tell me in more detail what specific activity you are using and the settings you have that allow the recording to continue while the watch is on charge.

  • I did not read the entire thread, so apologies if this has already been excluded, but setting USB mode to Garmin instead of MTP may be worth a try.

  • Hello,

AS Garmin don't give us solution or alternative or don't want improve their software:

I found a very very good software to analyse all FIT file !
A lot of settings, a lot of tables/graphs,...
    The tool is GoldenCheetah

You can IMPORT all format "FIT, GPX, CSV, ZIP,......"
You can export in CSV to réduce the size of your file..

Special Thank you to all people who gave me a comment !!

And no thanks to Garmin for its inaction and lack of solution.

    It would be time to:
1/ increase the admissible size in Garmin Connect: (think of all the long activities of amateurs “cycling/ultra-trail/...) ”
    >40Mb for 143 hours of measurement, it's very small.

2/ Configure the LIVETRACK so that it remains ACTIVE 24 hours after the end of an activity. (And not active 24 hours from the start of the activity!)

  • resuscitating an old post but this is still not solved.

i noticed the issue only because my garmin went crazy on my last ultra and had to save the run in 4 different fit files (470k total). I decided to stitch them together using fitactivity and upload them but that didn't work for the 99.999 points limitation.

so i restitched them using fitactivity but diminishing the number of points to 90.000 and that worked.

another working solution is to manually upload the fit file to the activity folder on the watch, to delete the upload cache from garmin connect and then to sync again. This worked for me

definitely garmin needs to sort this out!

  • Garmin promotes its Fenix and Enduro watches as ultrarunning watches. The most recent launch of Fenix and Enduro was at UTMB race, which is one of the most prestigious ultramarathons. Some UTMB distances are long enough to push the 50 hour limit mentioned by the author.

I think considering all of that, Garmin must clearly update the limit. 40 MB is not even a very large file by modern standards. A single high resolution picture can be bigger than that.
