FIT file too big (40Mb) for my activity : How can I add it in my Garmin Connect ?

(As requested by "BEN FIT"  I copy my post here for FENIX 7)

Good morning,

I currently use a Garmin FENIX 7X Sapphire.

I do the ultra-trail.
And so my outings can last between 10 hours and 145 hours.

1/
I noticed that the Garmin Connect APP limits the size of activity files to 25Mb.
Which corresponds to approximately 50 hours active (in light mode (without activating too many parameters))

I finished the TOR DES GEANTS 370km in Courmayeur in 143 hours and the file on my watch is 40Mb.
I don't know how to sync it with my Garmin Connect.

I have already contacted Garmin, who asks me to manipulate the file to delete measurements and transfer it to Strava to resynchronize it to Garmin Connect.
it does not work. “it’s a bit of DIY”

Does anyone have any ideas on how to sync my file?
I would like to analyze my track (timing/km in different zones)

2/
In ultra trail running, I also use the LiveTrack function so that my family and friends can follow me.
This is very useful when tracking in the mountains.
Well this LiveTRack is limited to 24 hours.
After 24 hours, I must restart the LiveTrack to receive a new tracking link and send this link to my family and friends.
My watch has a battery life of 86 hours and this LiveTRack is limited to 24 hours... :-(

I also contacted Garmin. but I have no response from them.

If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.
Thank you in advance for your help
jf

I assume Garmin already had you try a manual upload? How Do I Manually Upload an Activity I Recorded to Garmin Connect?

If that still doesn't work, Garmin can have issues with extremely large fit files These files can get ridiculously large if you've enabled every second recording. There is 3rd party software than can reduce the number of data records, while maintaining the integrity of GPS tracks and summary data, such as Fit File Repair Tool

If you can share your fit file, we might be able to assist.

    • Zip the file, then in a reply post Insert >> Image/video/file >> click Upload >> browse for file >> OK.
    • Or upload the fit file to a reputable file sharing service, such as OneDriveGoogle DriveDropbox, make the file public, then paste a link to the file in your post.
    • Or if you'd rather your activity was kept private, you can send me a private message.
  • One thing to consider is saving the activity every 12/24 hours or so. That will give you a number of smaller files that can be stitched together afterwards using free online tools. It also has the advantage of reducing the risk of losing the whole activity should something go wrong.

  • What happens if you plug it into your computer via USB and use Garmin Express to sync it? Will it accept the full 40Mb file then?

  • Hello,

    Thank you for you response.

a/ I already tried to reduce my file with other app ( with FitFileTools)

I already tried to reduce de size

Result: the trace is uploaded in STRAVA  and I see the trace BUT with no measurements !!

(I activated the synchro between strava and Garmin Connect.  but this activity is not displayed in Garmin Connect (other activities are synchro)

b/ I already sent my file to Garmin (And I give access to my Garmin Connect)

        result: no result

    c/ The file size is 40Mb : It's a very small file

The Processor ARM CORTEX M33 of my watch Fenix 7X can display my trace and measurements !

But my computer with an INTEL  i7 can't display my trace, can't display measurements via Garmin Connect !!!

The issue is simple: It's a Garmin limitation.

The solution is simple: Garmin Connect must accept file over 25Mb ( ok with a limitation (ex: 50Mb or 80Mb)

(I can send you my file / I will upload to a sharedrive)

  • Hello

    Thank you for you response:

But When I run, I must also stop my activity and restart a new activity.

During a night in the mountain, with storm or rain, I'm going to sit on the edge of the cliff and decide to stop my activity and start an activity again.
And then stop LiveTrack and restart a LiveTrack.
And then open my emails to take the new LiveTrack link to send it to my family and friends to follow me!!
(And all this if I have a network!)

    A little serious.
The Garmin Fenix 7x at €900 is a watch for monitoring a 5km trail activity in the city with 86 hours of battery life!?

In the Garmin parameters presented, we can read 86 hours of autonomy in activities.
And in practice we do not know how to record an activity of 86 hours!!

During an activity, I think you have something else to think about!?

  • Whilst I understand your frustration with your experience of file  limitations I think you may be overthinking the suggested workaround. It takes me 4 button presses and about 10-15 secs to stop, save and restart an activity. Meanwhile Live Track is started and email links sent automatically at the start of each activity.

  • In the Garmin parameters presented, we can read 86 hours of autonomy in activities.

Just because you can record nn hours of activity does not mean it’s sensible to do so. I’d much rather record a number of shorter files and stitch them together than lose everything. I’ve done this with multi-day activities on a a number of occasions.
As noted it takes seconds to do so.

  • Hello,

    Thank you for your idea.

    I tried Garmin Express.

The synchro is done.  all activities are synchro, EXCEPT my 'long' activity (FIT file of 40Mb)  :-(

If Garmin give a limitation of 25Mb for a FIT file..

There is not a lot of solution.... GArmin must modify the limitation... :-(

  • Do you have "smart" track recording or every 1 second? If you changed it to every second, it may be the cause of the file being too large.

  • I activated  ONLY GPS

    I disabled OTHER SATELIT measurements

I disabled SATELIT double frequency measurements.

    I limited measurements

    I reduce the light

    I disabled the notification

    I only keep FC

If I reduce more settings, I lost a part o my trace.

And I can't analyse my trace in a Mountain.

After 3 nights without sleep. IF I must add in my action points "Manage my watch because Garmin limit the size of activity to xx hours"

    seriously !!!

We speak about a file of 40Mb.

( you have a USB key with 64.000Mb, it's normal / you see the TV on your phone, it's 1.000Mb per hour, it's normal)
