recalculation of routes during the excursion

I have this problem that I would like to solve and which concerns the main function for which I bought the fenix 7 (I also installed the Garmin Explorer app for Android)

When I go to the mountains, I usually set an end point in the Garmin Explorer app so that I have turn-by-turn directions to that destination. The app then sends me back to the watch, I click "start" on the watch and begin my hike.

It happens, however, that perhaps the path that is suggested to me is not the one I want to take or I want to take a different one (longer, faster, steeper... ) but the route is no longer recalculated so the clock it keeps telling me to go in the wrong directions compared to the path I'm following. In this way the information the watch provides me becomes totally unusable (e.g. the ETA estimated time of arrival becomes useless, so do the step-by-step directions are totally wrong)
Is there a way to get the watch to recalculate my route? or do I have to use different apps like BaseCamp or other apps (e.g. Komoot or Outdooractivity)?
Thank you
  • Change the activity settings "Routing=>Courses" from "Follow Course" to "Use Map".  Then experiment to see the watch behaves how you would like.

I fixed it for you so your post is not annoying to read - it wasn't difficult.

  • Thanks, but I had already activated the "use map" function but the problem remains :-(
In the Hiking activity settings I have:
    1) Activity: Hiking
    2) Route popularity: ON
    3) Routes: Use map
    4) Calculation method: minimize distance
    5) Items to avoid: (everything OFF).

I don't understand how to solve the problem... maybe I need to deactivate
the "Popular routes" function? Sometimes the route it suggests to me is absurd: instead of taking a path of
a few hundred metres, it suggests a tour of several kilometres...
So the information on the watch becomes totally unusable :(
  • I'm not an expert in how Explore send the information to the watch. Is it as a Location that the watch calculate the route to or do Explore calculate the route and send that route as a course to the watch?

If it's a Location, maybe you could try to cancel Navigation in menu and select Navigate again to the same Location.

I agree that the watch should be able to recalculate by itself. Is there new routable paths that the watch has on the map?

Please do not use the 'Preformatted' when writing here.
    It's so hard to read.
  • Hi Paolo. Did you already try what I suggested in the other thread where you already asked the same question?

  • Hi Matthias! yes I've already tried, but it doesn' work.. that is, I set it as a waypont in Garmin Exploer and then synchronized it with the Fenix 7.. it calculates a route for me and if I change the route while I am walking, the watch continues to show me the old route and how far I am moving away from it... Disappointed

  • It takes some time until it decides to recalculates the route. I am not sure what triggers the re-calculation, a certain distance from the original route or a certain time off the route. I only use this very rarely, but i can remember that last time i walked for 5–10 minutes off the route before the watch decided to recalculate the route.

  • before the watch decided to recalculate the route

And new routes can only be recalculated if there are routable tracks in the area on the map installed in the watch. Is that the case? It can be expected to take some time too due to the limited processor capabilities within the watch.

  • I don't think that the recalculation is dependent on time because the indications of the old route remain with me for the entire duration of the new route. (so a few hours)

In the map I use on my watch I see the new path I'm following... so the path exists, I'm not walking in the middle of nowhere...

In summary: the problem is that if I set the arrival point from point "A" to point "D", I am offered a route which, passing through points "B" and "C", arrives at "D". However, if, having reached point "B", I decide to follow another path that passes through points "E" and "F", the watch does not recalculate the new path "A-B-E-F-D" but continues to show me the way to get to the old point “C” and then “D”

Probably depends on the internet connection? (= which obviously I don't have in the high mountains) But if that were the case I would never be able to have a recalculation of the routes because I will never have an internet connection in the mountains..

Or does it depend on the fact that I have the “Popular routes” setting enabled?

    I can't figure out which setting to change… Frowning2

    Thank you

This happened when the navigation was started from Garmin Explore App or also when  you selected the destination on the watch and the watch calculated the route?

Maybe the recalculation does not work when the route was started by Garmin Explore?
