Has anyone been able to compare map detail of trailfork maps between Fenix 7 and Epix?

I will be using for MTB only and don’t need routing with turn by turn directions.. I just want to be able to glance down at watch when I come to a trail junction instead of having to pull my phone out.

In the reviews I’ve seen using the standard non-trailfork base map it looked like the epix showed more detail and trails at a given zoom level. Curious if that is still true using the trailfork maps.

I’m the odd duck that actually prefers the dimmer screen of the Fenix as long as the trailfork trails aren’t being hidden due to lack of resolution.

  • You definitely can as I have seen it on a friends watch.
    here are the directions,

If you're like me and got the Epix because you wanted to use it for mountain biking, and also wanted to use trailforks maps-- this is what I had to do to get it to work. You will need a Mac or PC for this.

    As of 21 January 2022:

    1. The trailforks app is NOT currently available on the Fenix 7 or Epix through Garmin Connect IQ. I'm not sure if this is a permanent thing, or if Garmin hasn't updated their own internal list of compatible devices.

    2. Download the Trailforks MTB maps you want here: https://www.trailforks.com/tools/garminmaps/#mtb

    3. [This extra step is for Mac users] Download and install Android File Transfer. This is needed for navigating the storage of the watch. https://www.android.com/filetransfer/

    4. Connect the watch to your computer with the usb cable. Drag and drop the .img map file into the GARMIN folder (mac users need to do this through Android File Transfer). Disconnect the watch when done transferring.

    5. Long press the "Up.Menu" button on the side of the watch and navigate down to: Activities & Apps \ MTB \ MTB Settings \ Map \ Configure Maps. You should see your map at the bottom of this menu-- make sure it's enabled.

    6. Disable "TopoActive Maps". This step is necessary because otherwise the trailforks maps are hidden beneath this layer and aren't visible.

    7. Now when you start an MTB activity, the trailforks trails will show.

Interesting.  I didn't know this feature existed.
