What does Fenix 8 / Tactix 8 Need To Have To Make You Upgrade?

all the 965 talk got me thinking about the future of fenix/tactix and what it would take to get me to upgrade. garmin has never disappointed me before and i don't expect them to in the future, but what to expect? for me it would be a pretty short list. i just need a new sensor. if there's not a new optical sensor with improved accuracy, i see no reason to upgrade as that is easily the most important aspect of the watch. ecg would be nice, i'd prefer to NOT have amoled (although battery with mips is nowhere near what garmin promises) and i don't really need wireless charging either (and it's WILDLY inefficient). i'd love to see better solar charging (better efficiency from the panels) or maybe something radical like flexible panels on the watch band. for tactix i'd like to see something over the top like emp-resistance. in the end though it would come down to elevate 5...

  • - better display - compare to apple watch or Samsung - the display is very dim. a brighter display that easy to read in daylight would be great. It will shorten the battery life so it needs also ability to be turned off when not looking at the watch.

See? That's exactly what I meant by confusion and already existing smartwatches or features.

  • Something might be coming. The Fenix, Epix, and Tactix watches are on sale on garmin.ee with 200 USD discount. Or maybe it is just a summer holiday sale.

DCRainmaker just wrote a blog post about this.

In short, it's just a regular annual sale, Garmin does it every year in the weeks leading up to Father's Day in the US (June 16th).

Historically, Garmin does not have sales to "clear out inventory" in anticipation of a new model coming out, they're not like Toyota with their "end of model year clearance sales events". Garmin has sales whenever they have sales, and they release products whenever they release products, the two are never correlated, even though occasionally they do coincidentally coincide.

  • Yes I have read the DCRainmaker article. Indeed I also wrote that probably it is just  a sale not connected with new products release. However, I do remember sales just few weeks new products release.

  • There's been nothing registered with the FCC about new watches recently, nor any leaks. I think we're looking at early 2025 at this point and that's fine by me. I'd rather them hold off and give us something groundbreaking rather than a refresh.

  • I can see about 11 patents by Garmin in 2024 here https://ppubs.uspto.gov/pubwebapp/static/pages/ppubsbasic.html related to watches, some of which are titled just "Watch with display". Anyway I am not sure these means an imminent release of new watches.

  • I hate to say it but I wholeheartedly agree. As much as I'd love a new upgraded Fenix/Epix watch, there's very little that my Epix Pro is missing, and I really just don't feel any need to upgrade it any time soon. But I also know that I have the self control of a 5 year old in a candy store, and I will end up spending a ton of money buying whatever the next upgrade is regardless of how small of an upgrade it is... so my preference is for Garmin to hopefully not release anything new for a while longer, and to make sure that when they do release it, that it's a fantastic upgrade.

  • Its always funny when someone here says that Amoled is future and Mip is outdated and probably will be ditched. I'm looking forward to next generation Mip featured watches. Who want to have so fragile and burnt in display? Not me

  • Oh damn. How old is that watch?

  • idk how funny it is, it's reality. and facts. amoled is dramatically newer tech, MIPS is, relatively speaking, ancient. you're not seriously going to argue this point are you?

the bottom line is you're not going to find a premium MIPS offering from garmin or anyone else in the VERY near future. again, personally i'd heavily prefer mini/micro LED as it's the best of all worlds, but for whatever reason nobody wants to use it for watches. yet...
