What does Fenix 8 / Tactix 8 Need To Have To Make You Upgrade?

all the 965 talk got me thinking about the future of fenix/tactix and what it would take to get me to upgrade. garmin has never disappointed me before and i don't expect them to in the future, but what to expect? for me it would be a pretty short list. i just need a new sensor. if there's not a new optical sensor with improved accuracy, i see no reason to upgrade as that is easily the most important aspect of the watch. ecg would be nice, i'd prefer to NOT have amoled (although battery with mips is nowhere near what garmin promises) and i don't really need wireless charging either (and it's WILDLY inefficient). i'd love to see better solar charging (better efficiency from the panels) or maybe something radical like flexible panels on the watch band. for tactix i'd like to see something over the top like emp-resistance. in the end though it would come down to elevate 5...

  • For me not much more than

    1. priority: rocksolid software with every feature working as it should. And no more updates which ruin the functions which were already working while fullfilling perceived needs. At least an OFFICIAL way to roll back software version to last known good.

    2. priority: more rugged hardware (bezel, glass), At least replaceable spares for bezel, glass and battery in case the best material gave in to hard use.

  • Replaceable bezel would be very nice. You can technically replace your entire screen/bezel combination by buying one off eBay, but it'd be nice if you could just swap out the bezel on its own without needing to disassemble the entire watch.

  • The biggest frustration for me is the lack of integrated data for the analytics. Eg one measure will say great management of balance and load, another will say heart is doing great, another says recovery suggests you are adapting well.  And the others: overreaching/time for rest.

The metrics are all at odds.

Yeah it can be confusing. You can technically have a balanced training load over the past few weeks, have good HRV but a mammoth training session today can blow through the training "budget" and have you overreaching.

It takes a little while to gradually learn how to interpret it all, so maybe Garmin can do better in allowing people to switch the watch to a more simple mode which just gives an overview of health and some basic recommendations in the morning like "try and walk 2km today"

  • basic recommendations in the morning like "try and walk 2km today"

This is already available with the daily suggestions. The suggestions adapt automatically based on the data collected by the watch.

  • But doesn't that make the descent series redundant?

Also no offence but it's a tad more than a depth sensor for scuba, it's the profile and the calculations both for air and mix gas.

  • the more i think about it and research this, the more i'm beginning to think the f/t 8 is going to be their first solar oled watch...

  • Same stuff like the Tactix 7pro solar already has, just:

    - No touch screen

+ a domed sapphire glass like the Tactix Delta has (way better to have no reflections by sunlight)

So I hope all those OLED speculations are untrue, otherwise it would make the epix line obsolete. And I really don't understand why some here hopes for an OLED display because the they are on the wrong forum, epix forum also exists. And probably a thread "epix 3 wishlist" also.

This is a wishlist... some realistic, some unrealistic (size and weight)

    0. MIP display and visibility, but way better quality even compared to the Fenix 7 Pro (like Fenix 6 line which had perfect visibility when backlight was off)

    1. smaller Fenix s line. Not 42mm but maybe 39-40mm with a 1.1inch display. Even the 7s looks a bit big on my not very small 6inch wrist.

    2. better heartrate sensor including finer move detection for better sleep analysis. sleep is one of the most important metrics for health, so why are the companies not trying to improve sleep detection (I know it is not easy on the wrist, but esp Garmin is not good at all)

    3. way faster chip (ok I own the 7s standard still). when switching data screen to maps it takes too long to show the map, also scrolling isn't really very slow it could be much faster, the whole watch in general

    4. make it lighter, the watch is quite heavy which doesn't make it easier for the hr sensor to be accurate

    5. the speakers from the Venu 3 line, it is cool to get alarms with spoken data

I can't think of anything else atm, these are the most important ones.

And it is true that the Fenix line will get oled displays without a mip display in any size option, I have to switch to another brand. I like oled displays for the first few days, having tried epix and venu watches. But after a few days they are only annoying to me and I always come back to the Fenix line with its not so bright colors and always on display which almost looks like a real watch. Everything nowadays has to be BIG BIG BIG and BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT.

  • well the writing is on the wall for MIPS. it's just the reality of it. i'm personally not crazy about OLED either, but since miniLED is nowhere to be seen in this industry, OLED is sooner rather than later going to be the only game in town. as far as model overlap, this is garmin. they'll differentiate in subtle software/feature changes but i'd imagine even if their entire lineup is OLED there will still be an epix line, a fenix line and the tactix line all living happily in their own niches.

i predict this is probably going to be the last year for MIPS, particularly if they've truly figured out solar on OLED
