What does Fenix 8 / Tactix 8 Need To Have To Make You Upgrade?

all the 965 talk got me thinking about the future of fenix/tactix and what it would take to get me to upgrade. garmin has never disappointed me before and i don't expect them to in the future, but what to expect? for me it would be a pretty short list. i just need a new sensor. if there's not a new optical sensor with improved accuracy, i see no reason to upgrade as that is easily the most important aspect of the watch. ecg would be nice, i'd prefer to NOT have amoled (although battery with mips is nowhere near what garmin promises) and i don't really need wireless charging either (and it's WILDLY inefficient). i'd love to see better solar charging (better efficiency from the panels) or maybe something radical like flexible panels on the watch band. for tactix i'd like to see something over the top like emp-resistance. in the end though it would come down to elevate 5...

  • I’d love to see Garmin evolve their training workout plans to be similar in capacity to the apple fitness+ app. As there current fitness program is absolutely positively abysmal. Free apps off the App Store are better!!

What I would most appreciate thought is as a shift worker with irregular sleep throughout the day. That the rather abysmal sleep tracking software made suitable to shift workers and their irregular sleep pattern's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shame on Garmin. The people buying these watches work in the military or public sector with known bad sleeping patterns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Additionally, t would be nice to see the tactix maintain no mic or other similar audio & recording equipment (otherwise I’d have to drop it) so that people who work in areas that do not permit smart watches due to electronic warfare concerns makes this the difference between apple and Garmin. However in the same sentence it would be great to see the tactic line become even more natively supportive for those that work in closed information environments.

  • Dual layer display. Low power monochrome MIPS over OLED. Best of both worlds that is configurable.

  • That would be really nice! Does anyone else offer that?

  • Very important. I've had garmin detect 1hr of a 12hr sleep but I've also had the watch determine that I was sleeping for 18 hours when I slept for about 4.5.

  • This is how I see the Garmin Fenix 8 watches in the early to mid-2025:

    • Enhanced solar charging - more days of autonomy from sunlight.
    • Reduction in watch thickness and weight.
    • Modern redesigned look - larger screen relative to the case.
    • 64 GB of memory.
    • New 6th generation elevate sensor (new features like skin temperature and improved sleep tracking).
    • Increased autonomy and slightly faster charging.
    • New MIP LCD screen with high resolution, but not AMOLED.
    • New SOS feature with a paid subscription, similar to Inreach.
    • Improved software
  • 64gb at a minimum, hopefully, but 2025 is a long way away. I remember back when I got a 250gb storage drive and people were calling me stupid for buying so much storage.

Also just so you know, the correct term should be 'storage'. Memory would be ram (which I'd also like to see an increase in on the epix series)

  • AMOLED, solar, more storage

  • I’d like to be able to see one or more course on the map screen without having to follow a course. Just like all the handheld and bike GPS units I use.

  • AMOLED? Then go with an Epix. Personally, for activities in bright sun or have the screen always visible within an activity, I find MiP to be better.

  • eh i was right there with you until i saw the epix pro gen 2 in person. garmin has some work to do to convince me to go with mips next time around

    1. they need to up the mips resolution. the gap between displays is really noticeable now and it was only made worse by the 15.74 update that shows a nice image in the display that's a low resolution mess vs amoled

    2. they need to figure out solar or ditch it. works great (great!) on my 1040 solar. doesn't work whatsoever on my tactix 7 pro. there's just not enough screen real estate to make any kind of measurable difference

    3. the battery life gap is not as great as i thought. i get 11 days on my mips watch. these guys are claiming 9 days with the same settings (everything turned on basically). that's a hit i'd most likely take to get the better screen

    4. mips really shines in full sun, but i was very surprised at how the amoled looked in full sun as well. i'm thinking the gap just isn't there anymore, and i'm fairly certain the amoled is better indoors anyway

    5. it's a minor crazy thing, but because of the stupid solar panel i really refrain from touching my watch outdoors. i have this crazy idea that smudges might degrade whatever sun is getting to the panels. it's ridiculous, but that's how i am. would have zero such issues with amoled

yeah so basically if/when they release the tactix 8 pro with amoled i'm probably going with that over the solar mips version unless they've addressed the above
