What does Fenix 8 / Tactix 8 Need To Have To Make You Upgrade?

all the 965 talk got me thinking about the future of fenix/tactix and what it would take to get me to upgrade. garmin has never disappointed me before and i don't expect them to in the future, but what to expect? for me it would be a pretty short list. i just need a new sensor. if there's not a new optical sensor with improved accuracy, i see no reason to upgrade as that is easily the most important aspect of the watch. ecg would be nice, i'd prefer to NOT have amoled (although battery with mips is nowhere near what garmin promises) and i don't really need wireless charging either (and it's WILDLY inefficient). i'd love to see better solar charging (better efficiency from the panels) or maybe something radical like flexible panels on the watch band. for tactix i'd like to see something over the top like emp-resistance. in the end though it would come down to elevate 5...

  • Most desired improvements are:

    - 1.5 in display for both MIP and AMOLED

    - Better sleep tracking. As a minimum with the option to deactivate the schedule and simply indicating when one go to sleep and when wake up.

    - 64 Gb storage

  • yeah, battery replacement

  • not going to get another fenix, waiting for the descent mk3s

  • Yes please Garmin if you read this please no amoled display

  • They need to show some love to the mapping companion app (Garmin explore). That could be so useful if it just would have a map on which you actually could see and find something.

Same on the Web: Garmin has the best popularity map feature (differing between e.g. gravel and MTB, not like strava where its all the same) but then they are showing a map which n oone wants to use for route planning.

Oh, none of that requires any new HW. But I understand they need to pay the bills of their devs. Maybe its time to move to an abo model and start making good SW!

  • Ditch Solar, it's pointless and makes the screen less readable. Reduce the bezel size where the solar ring is.

  • Really, after they told you that the watch doesn’t provide accurate information during your dive? Go ahead, and fork over thousands of dollars to have an inaccurate dive computer on your wrist…Makes no sense whatsoever.

And for all the naysayers, sauce provided below. I teach for a living and I run a dive shop, no dive computer has this kind of warning. It may say that an electronic device may fail, but not one dive computer, in the industry says that it doesn’t provide in-accurate information. Garmin obviously has had something happen and that’s why they had to put this disclaimer on.

  • My personal wish list for a Fenix 8:

As others have said, get rid of the solar charging please.  It doesn't really help battery life much, it makes the screen lower contrast (readable) from what I've heard, and use the space taken by solar to make the readable screen larger/higher resolution.

Better color and contrast for the screen, probably my biggest beef with my F7X Sapphire - easy to read in full sun, but difficult in low light or if you've got polarized sunglasses on.

Better HR/Pulse Ox is a given, but I don't really need my watch to be a EKG machine either.

Better cable for charging/computer interface.  Once you've used the cable for a while the connection gets "soft" - you think it's charging, but it's really not (this is a major PITA when you're in the field sleeping in a tent and your watch doesn't charge overnight).

Please no mic or LTE - if I want a smartwatch, I'll buy one.  If I really need to use my phone while I'm playing outside, I'll stop/pull over and use it, my watch does not need to be an extension of my phone.  Same goes for SOS type stuff - I've got a phone and an inReach Mini 2.  Trying to make this watch "do everything" is only going to push up the cost/complexity/size and shorten the battery life.

    Just my 2 cents?

  • Having the option to remove golfing maps would immediately free up space for many users

  • already you can (at "your own risk") delete these files/maps. Note this is less than 1GB so is unlikely to make much meaningful difference.
