What does Fenix 8 / Tactix 8 Need To Have To Make You Upgrade?

all the 965 talk got me thinking about the future of fenix/tactix and what it would take to get me to upgrade. garmin has never disappointed me before and i don't expect them to in the future, but what to expect? for me it would be a pretty short list. i just need a new sensor. if there's not a new optical sensor with improved accuracy, i see no reason to upgrade as that is easily the most important aspect of the watch. ecg would be nice, i'd prefer to NOT have amoled (although battery with mips is nowhere near what garmin promises) and i don't really need wireless charging either (and it's WILDLY inefficient). i'd love to see better solar charging (better efficiency from the panels) or maybe something radical like flexible panels on the watch band. for tactix i'd like to see something over the top like emp-resistance. in the end though it would come down to elevate 5...

  • What I would need may seem trivial.  However,

    1-Body Temperature Measurements

2-Ability to use regular watchbands without the need for adapters that make regular bands uncomfortable and too big (for my wife's wrist)

3-A decent trade in allowance.  I only bought the Fenix 7 a little less than a year ago.  Not likely to purchase again very soon unless there is some downward pressure on the price.

Samsung got numbers 2 and 3 right with their galaxy series.  Number 1 is missing from a lot of wrist tech and is the only thing I miss from my Oura ring.

  • LTE: even if this just means the core emergency/safety "features" of 945LTE ... plus at least some slight enhancements. Let me send a Running-Late-For-Dinner message to the wifey without calling in the helicopter. I do NOT need/want social media on my watch. But I absolutely DO need ability to call for medical, and I don't see myself still wearing 2 watches a year from now. So for me, LTE is an existential question for Garmin wearables.

  • That's easy. There is only one thing that Garmin needs to do for me to upgrade to the 8 and possibly fix that would keep me with the 7X and that is fixing the sleep algorithm. If it is a sensor issue as well then fix that and I would upgrade. The Garmin's are notoriously bad at accurately tracking sleep skewing more time toward light sleep and way underestimating awake time and deep sleep. The problem of course is that the inaccurate sleep measurement affects a lot of other things as well such as training readiness and body battery to name a couple. I also wear a Whoop strap as it is much better at sleep tracking. Fix the sleep and I can finally just wear one device!

  • But supported in other countries too. So maybe eSIM is the way...

  • I'm actually thinking of ditching the Whoop as the results are pretty much the same as the 7 for me.

  • I would like Garmin to move the solar panels to the watch strap and stop using the space of the screen for solar panels.

  • Please move the solar panel to the watch strap and shrink the bezel.

  • Incident detection for motorcycling/ADV activities.

    • Temperature.
    • Optical Blood Pressure (I know a few companies are working on this and don't have it reliable enough for a watch yet).
    • Mic (ambient noise monitoring, Siri if connected to BT).
    • Depth gauge to at least snorkel-common depths.
    • Irregular Rhythm detection.
    • Wireless charging or something less finicky and prone to disconnecting as the current charger.

And while not Garmin's fault I'd love it if we could select which notifications we get to the watch on iPhones. Some notifications (mostly news headlines) I only want to my phone, don't need my watch buzzing about them. This is something Apple needs to change, though as Apple don't give third party apps any access to know what the content or source of a notification is, so Garmin only have the option of passing all or passing none to the watch.

  • Actually, solar panels don't use the space of the screen. They use space of the bezel. Without them watch will be the same size and bezel will be thicker like the watches in previous non solar models. I don't think Garmin will decrease the case size just by removing the solar strip. It is needed to contain the battery and other components too.

If you prefer smaller bezels Forerunner series can be looked at.

However, larger solar cells on the strap may produce more power. However, it'll mean different strap holding mechanism or even irreplaceable straps etc...
