What does Fenix 8 / Tactix 8 Need To Have To Make You Upgrade?

all the 965 talk got me thinking about the future of fenix/tactix and what it would take to get me to upgrade. garmin has never disappointed me before and i don't expect them to in the future, but what to expect? for me it would be a pretty short list. i just need a new sensor. if there's not a new optical sensor with improved accuracy, i see no reason to upgrade as that is easily the most important aspect of the watch. ecg would be nice, i'd prefer to NOT have amoled (although battery with mips is nowhere near what garmin promises) and i don't really need wireless charging either (and it's WILDLY inefficient). i'd love to see better solar charging (better efficiency from the panels) or maybe something radical like flexible panels on the watch band. for tactix i'd like to see something over the top like emp-resistance. in the end though it would come down to elevate 5...

  • This is what a Fenix 8

Should have and i would have changed... Yesterday.

    1. No touch screen, just buttoms like today.

2 no led screen, I rathe have battery life.

    3. Most important. E-sim, LTE... Then you can stream music, make phone call AND send emergency message if something happens... Not like today.

    4 Sapphire glass.

    5. Solar charge.

    6 Wireless chargering

    7. Replaceable wristbands

Most of this is like today... My Fenix 6 Sapphire is magic... It just misses 3, 5 and 6...

Fix that and you have the best watch in the world! Trust me on this one.

    In response to David…

1 Touch screen - essential for using the map screen, ok for some other functions, all switchable by the user, so keep this

2 I think you mean AMOLED. I’d agree, keep the existing technology for outdoor use, it’s not a fashion watch.

3 LTE might be nice, no need to bring a phone, but not essential at all for me, especially on exped with no phone coverage. A nice to have option?

6 Wireless charging - nice to have, but not necessary for for exped, cable still very ok

7 We already have replaceable wristbands…

  • Symetric buttons:

When I put watches on the left hand / right hand would be nice to keep button layout same => buttons near to wrist would work same on left / right hand.

  • Another solution would be the possibility to rotate the screen by 180°.

  • My old VivoActive 3 Music had that ability - there was only one side button, and you could tell the watch which side you wanted the button to be on, and it would flip the display 180 degrees accordingly.

It doesn't make any sense on the Fenix line though, they'd have to delete the button labels or else they would all be wrong if everything flipped around 180 degrees. And besides the label issue, to make it symetrical you'd have to either get rid of the Up/Menu button, or add a superfluous 6th button on the other side, neither of which are great options.

Not to mention, the flashlight would also be pointing the wrong way. Though, they could potentially add a second flashlight, which is an idea I actually wouldn't be opposed to, it would make it an even better running/safety light.

  • Well, if the screen were rotated 180°, you would of course have to rotate the clock 180° as well.
The buttons would still be correct, but the start button would now be at the bottom left instead of the top right.
I hadn't thought of the flashlight, which is a good argument.

  • Option to resume last saved activity - it happened twice where during rainy trial run I stopped for a short break, paused the activity and a drop of rain "clicked" save activity on F7

  • An eye tracker to turn the backlight on as long as I am looking at the watch. Face recognition so only I can see the messages I receive. Linux as the OS so I can send the FIT files via scp to my system, and can run homebrew software on my watch, written in whatever language is hip at the moment.

This was not entirely serious. I am happy with the 7 and can't think of anything that would make me upgrade.

It is so incredibly bad that the touch is allowed to make irreversible changes like that. That renders touch unusable in my opinion.

When Garmin first released Fenix 7 it had a very good balance of where the touch was enable and the watch usability in rain. But since that Garmin has "improved" support for touch to the point where I can no longer enable touch at all, not even for maps.

  • Id like a microphone to receive and make calls .

    Speed in mph and kmh

Plus everything the 7 has !
