What does Fenix 8 / Tactix 8 Need To Have To Make You Upgrade?

all the 965 talk got me thinking about the future of fenix/tactix and what it would take to get me to upgrade. garmin has never disappointed me before and i don't expect them to in the future, but what to expect? for me it would be a pretty short list. i just need a new sensor. if there's not a new optical sensor with improved accuracy, i see no reason to upgrade as that is easily the most important aspect of the watch. ecg would be nice, i'd prefer to NOT have amoled (although battery with mips is nowhere near what garmin promises) and i don't really need wireless charging either (and it's WILDLY inefficient). i'd love to see better solar charging (better efficiency from the panels) or maybe something radical like flexible panels on the watch band. for tactix i'd like to see something over the top like emp-resistance. in the end though it would come down to elevate 5...

  • Looking at what Garmin is doing right now, F7 could be my only Garmin device then. Thanks

I agree. Fenix is a device for outdoor adventures first and foremost, yet most outdoor specific features are half-baked or half-broken. Navigation in particular needs a lot of work. And there is no sign that Garmin is working on improving that. I am happy to be mistaken though. But I won't buy another Garmin device until features that I personally care about are fixed. That doesn't even require any new hardware.

All i want from my next Fenix 8X (Sapphire Solar) is:

    1. bigger battery

    2. better solar charging

    3. built in mic-speaker

    4. more affordable straps

    5. 64Gb

  • Better processor and faster screen response

    LTE for calls

    Better buttons

  • Curious. Why would you prefer it NOT have Amoled?  I was of the impression it was a superior display.

    • LTE
    • speaker + mic
    • new charging standard (Marq 2 style or magnetic)

All of the above have been demonstrated on other Garmin watches, separately - there's convergence happening so I think it's only a matter of time. The Fenix 7X is so feature-rich, and having dual-band GPS, I will likely skip the next generation watch if it doesn't have my wish-list items.

  • Well for me I don't need a brilliant display. I'm not watching YouTube on it, I'm working out. Now, if there was little trade off, then fine, give me AMOLED, but that's not the case. You're basically halving your battery, and I'd rather have the battery.

Interesting to see the cat's out of the bag regarding elevate 5 sensor. Should have ecg I'd imagine, but I'm also really hoping for skin temperature and galvanic skin response, the latter of which would seriously elevate Garmin to the top of the fitness wearable category

  • If history is a guide my 7X will fail some time around the time the fenix 8 launches. Hopefully after the first round of serious bugs are worked out and I will upgrade because my watch has started spontaneously rebooting on the run or flat out died. And I’ll be happy for the upgrade.

Yes, but Garmin positions Fenix as outdoor recreation watch.

Speaker + Mic would impact waterproofness.

Magnetic charger would impact compass calibration every time when the watch is charged (that was my negative experience with Suunto 9 Baro).
