Night Sleep Data gets replaced by daytime "sleep"

Chris from Garmin again locked the previous thread also the problem is far from solved. So here is a new thread.

The issue is that in some cases a normal sleep recording is replaced by a very short nap and totally screws all connecting data like the recovery status.

Garmin now says that this is by design, which makes no sense at all.

Correct. Engineering has asked for new examples on v11.28 after minor changes made to sleep. Thank you for creating a new thread.

  •  as you can see in one of my earlier post in this thread I think I understand why the watch still register sleep less than 3 hours. In the example I gave the watch thought I slept between 8:23-11:50 while actually working from home which is 3:27 hour. During that false sleeping it thought I was awake at several times and it seems the watch only presents the time when it thinks you actually slept not counting those periods during sleep when registered as awake. Thus the watch summarized the sleep to be 2:57h when the sleep including awake periods was 3:27. Thus more than 3 hours but presented to user as less than 3 hours. Maybe this explains it. With that said still an issue that worse sleep replaces better sleep

  • didn't observe earlier that the watch starting detecting sleep would turn on sleep mode

I have no idea whether this is a new “feature” or a bug. I neither have seen it before. If it happens again I let you know.

  • My bad. Your picture actually shows a battery saver watch face, not the sleep mode one. I am curious: do you have battery saver on during sleep mode?

  • Where did I marked issue as solved?! I just marked my answer as suggested answer to gain attention to Garmin that issue is not solved and "users are repeatedly requesting to not replace prior night's sleep, regardless how long nap is." ;)

  • do you have battery saver on during sleep mode

In settings, Sleep Mode, Watch Face, I have selected “sleep” which is a special watch face that can be enabled when watch enter sleep mode which it does when enter sleep window. I have never seen it appear outside sleep window before unless you actively entered sleep mode from sleep widget which I did not in this case.

  • Where did I marked issue as solved?! I just marked my answer as suggested answer to gain attention

That was what I meant. When mark “suggest as answer” it will shown up in list with a “blue” check, and I guess if people vote it up it will be a green check. That indicates at least to me that there might be a solution. I mean selecting “suggest as answer” indicates that you have proposed an answer (solution) to the issue raised in thread; at least that is how I interpret it.

With that said I understand your reasoning. No personal criticism to you just a reflection from my side

And I definitely agree with your statement that you communicated to Garmin, saying “users are repeatedly requesting to not replace prior night's sleep, regardless how long nap is.” Thumbs up for that.

  • Ha! I don't usually look at my sleep metrics, but apparently I experience this issue a lot. I was wondering why my training readiness was bad!

For example, on Monday, apparently, I slept for only 2h 34m, starting from 11:56 am. In reality I was working on computer.

Another example - few days ago it recorded my sleep from 6 am to 9 am. What actually happened is that I got up to get my dog out, then went back to sleep.

Another example. Today I was in an online meeting the whole day. The watch recorded my entire work day as sleep from 9 am to 5 pm - 4 hours of that as light sleep and 4 hours as being awake.

    This is seriously broken!

  • Unfortunately until this is fixed I have now decided to instead wear my Apple Watch during daytime and only use the Garmin watch (Epix 2) during training and while sleep at night so that I can get the Training readiness and daily suggestions to work

However I will miss out on tracking stress, breath, pulse during day, and body battery. Just had to chose which functionality that is more important for me. The bad thing is that these data when reliable and working contributes to give me insights on my training and how well I adapt to the training that I do.

I payed a lot to get a watch tracking all these metrics and assist me in my training. If not interested in all these metrics I could have bought a cheaper Garmin model just for tracking the exercise itself not wearing it 24/7. As I see it, the watch is now broken since the functionality does not work as advertised; That is UNACCEPTABLE

I bought the AW to be able to listen to Apple Music while running so that I do not need to bring a heavy iPhone with me. I did not expect that I had to replace my Garmin watch with Apple Watch also during daytime which is what I will do until problem fixed

  • I've switched back to Polar for sleep and recovery. My Epix 2 is still my main workout device, but that's it for the moment.

  • We continue to work on improving sleep detection.

If your watch is recording short amounts of sleep during the day for under 3 hours and is syncing and replacing your prior night's sleep, please highlight my name and send me a Private Message. Thank you!

I'm not sure, but why are you only focusing on recording  nap time under 3h, when recording nap time over 3h is also wrong. The watch should not record any naps, if it overwrites last night sleep.

The main problem is, why does nap under or over 3h overwrite last night sleep?

A nap under or over 3h should be added to the sleep data, not overwrite it.

Why is this so difficult for Garmin to understand?
