Wet sleeve touching the watch screen during a run has changed all fields on data screen on its own. Whaaat!!!?

So apparently a long touch on any data field during an activity enters the data screen configuration mode. That can't be turned off unless the entire touch is disabled. I don't know who in Garmin though that was a smart idea. That person apparently doesn't understand what conditions Fenix can be used in.

I my case I was trail running,. The weather was cool so I was wearing a long sleeve t-shirt, and the sleeve was covering my watch. Then at one point I realized that all 4 fields on the main data screen got changed to some other arbitrary fields. That is really really unacceptable for any serious outdoor usage. I know that I can turn touch off, but it has a lot of value on the map screen, and I use touch on the map screen a lot.

Please, Garmin, there really has to be an option to enable touch only on the map screen! Short of that please remove this stupid quick configuration by touching the screen. It is really redundant because there are several other ways to achieve the same without changing the data screen unintentionally like it happened in my case. Or perhaps there should be some other way to disable this.  In my case there wasn't even a rain. The sleeve got slightly wet from the sweat. To me this watch behavior is simply unacceptable. I don't want to ever use touch for anything other than zooming and panning the map. If this happens during a trail race I'd have to stop and spend precious time fixing the data screen or get stuck with the data screen being unusable.

  • He reported a bug, disabling a function that is needed to trigger it is not resolving the issue.

  • Agree completely. This guy's rant is silly and opinionated. It's why touch is disabled by default in activities and map only touch (which should have been there since launch) is coming shortly

  • ok boss, as long as your happy ;-)

  • I might be alone in this but I enjoy that feature as I can change data fields on the fly whenever I see need.

Does it actually work for you? As you can see in the attached video, long pressing on the bottom field, doesn't do anything, while long pressing on a field in the middle row changes all 4 data fields to some other arbitrary data fields. Any subsequent attempt to change any of other fields always resets back to those 4 fields, so basically changes don't stick. As far as I can tell, this feature doesn't even work.

And, by the way, it is also easy to change data fields on the fly using buttons. Long press on the middle button brings activity app menu, and from there screens can be customized. That works even in older models of Fenix.

  • Yes, it works fine for me. Strange that yours is behaving that way.

  • Yes, it works fine for me.

Since I always have Touch Off during activities I've not experienced this. However, I've just tried this on a Run, Hike, OWS, and Bike activity (with Touch Enabled) and it works as expected. I can change each data field on a 4,5, or 6 field layout without any problems.

I like that Garmin have enabled touch for Maps only but how hard is it really to enable/disable Touch on the fly using Hot Keys? It's what I do because if I want to interact with the map during a run to the extent I need to change zoom, pan etc, I'll have slowed to a walk or even stopped. I certainly won't try to do anything with such a small screen when I'm trying to negotiate trails.

Strange that yours is behaving that way.

I am on the latest beta (11.20) so perhaps that's the difference.

  • I am on the latest beta (11.20) so perhaps that's the difference.

I am on the current stable version, so perhaps that the difference. I've also seen a report of the same bug here: https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/epix-2/315404/all-the-data-fields-changed-randomly-when-using-touch-to-edit

Anyway, once the option to enable touch only on the map screen is available, I'll use it. That's good enough for me. I have a shortcut to enable/disable touch, but that doesn't really solve the issue because it is too easy to forget to disable touch after enabling it, especially during a long race. For the same reason I fail to successfully use shortcuts to lock and unlock the watch.

An ideal solution for me would be a sort of "soft lock" that would allow me to change data screens and zoom/pan map but avoid any other changes to the activity or watch configuration. I'd lock my watch that way in a beginning of a race or a long run and not unlock it until I've finished.

  • I tried again with some other profiles and as soon as I long press one of the data fields, it resets to some kind of default with timer/active calories etc. like what's happening in your case.

I'm also running the stable version.

Let's see if the next stable version will fix the issue.

  • I ran into this issue again today - again unintentionally. I was actually trying to press the UP button with the right hand (while wearing the watch on the left hand). I was running fast so pressing that button with my index finger was a bit awkward. Somehow I touched the screen and that messed up all data fields again.

I was playing with this feature later and realized that I need to be touching the screen for only 1 second to enter the data screen customization.

That is too short! It shouldn't be that easy to mess up the data screen even if the bug is fixed and the customization works properly. Perhaps the press and hold duration should be at least 2 seconds or maybe even 3 seconds.

  • Is there an open ticket yet? Is there an open topic in the beta forum? I'm losing track.
