Training readiness - almost always low, almost never good

Just wondering how Training Readiness is working for other users out there?

For me, the status is almost never good - I had it ONCE in many weeks now (was using beta firmware) that the watch told me I am ready to work out. It doesn't really matter what I do (sleep long, train more, train less, have a relaxing weekend etc), the training readiness status is always low (but changing numbers, so it is doing something).

I might feel top notch and well rested, like I could run an ultra marathon that day - but the watch tells me I am not ready. Pretty weird, and it has actually prevented me a few times to go out for a run before I realized that the metric does not work very well at all.

What are your experiences?

  • How did you edit the standard sleep duration?
If you are talking about the schedule of the sleep mode, I don't think that that changes Garmin default recommendation of 8 hours. I have set my sleep mode from 00:00 to 7:00, but don't get a green checkmark for my sleep duration in GC for anything less than 8 hours.

  • Yes, that's exactly what I did - Midnight to 07h, just like you. I think that my training readiness improves when I hit the 7 hours of sleep. Previously, I had set my sleep from midnight to 08h, and since I never hit 8h, I think that my training readiness was never green. But hey, I didnt test this "scientifically", this might be completely wrong :-)

  • That's good to know Ben.  Thanks for sharing, I will give that a try and see what happens.

  • After changing my sleep schedule from 8h to 7h yesterday, I am for the first time out of the red and into the orange.  I'm suspecting after a few more nights, it should improve further.  I'm also curious if the body battery chart uses the manually entered sleep schedule (7hrs now) as a target as well.  The graph seems to show a climb towards 100% at the wake up hour.....  I'll monitor that moving forward as well.  Thanks again for the 7hr tip Ben.  Will report back after a few more days.

  • Happy to report changing your sleep schedule from 8hr to 7hr fixed the 'Training Readiness' rating for me.  Normal activity days our now out of the red and into the orange/green, with nothing changing except my sleep length.   Yesterday I did 5hrs of training (2.5hrs of high intensity), and this morning I'm back to red (with 7.5hrs sleep), which is what I'd expect to see.  So, good idea to lower your planned sleep schedule to something you hit repeatedly.  Thanks again Ben.  Happy training.

I am having the same problem with all of my Garmin devices. I think the algorithms that the watch uses are off. I am a former professional athlete and after weeks I keep getting the same bad news. And again it does not matter what I do too.

  • Same here. I use an indoor trainer/bike. If I do anymore than one VO2 hard session per week it will show a low training readiness score. I take 2 rest days per week. Using this as a stand alone metric would require 2-3 days rest days in a row to show an acceptable range.

  • Same. If I run more than half an hour a day at a crawl I get low TR. Now for example, I feel strong, fresh and my TR is 1. I went for a really easy run yesterday, slept 9 hrs. Rested all day. I tried to use Garmin suggested runs but it was ridiculous. Now I ignore it.

What's your body battery score at the beginning and end of the day? Do you drink alcohol? (This can seriously impact recovery)

  • I got a cold last week, my HRV is low but Garmin still suggests to run threshold  :D
