thanks for the thread OP. it seems this is a real software issue here. garmin is treating HRV as two entirely separate and incompatible metrics on the same platform, one in Health Snapshot, which seems…
same for me. i think it disables it if you're wearing an external strap, which is odd
You need a garmin hr strap fyi or at least that is what it says.
No, it does not say that. It says that bands from other companies 'might' not record HRV readings. Polar H9 and H10 bands record HRV. Not for nothing is the H10 said to be the best band on the market.
And then it goes on to say ' we recommend using a Garmin band', not that it is mandatory to use one.
So they should get HRV data from the polar H9 and H10 bands, but they don't. It's either a bug or something premeditated to 'force' the use of Garmin bands.
Agreed - The ANT standard mandates that HRV is sent as part of the protocol, so it would be bizarre if Garmin are failing to follow industry standards.
The H9 or H10 should work - in the F6 and its HRV Stress test they do.
A Garmin HRM is not needed per se - anything else looks like a delibrate lockout, not a good look when Polar H9 or H10 belts are generally considered superor solutions for HRV purposes.
Just a fyi I did another snap shot today and got the hrv to work. No chest strap used fyi.
In order to have it show up you must have Gc app open. If you dont have GC open and connected to the watch while doing snapshot it will not work or show up.
test it yourself but that is how it works for me. Hr is high as I was messing around and normal is 50 for me.
OP said he tried a Garmin strap and it still doesn't work
Sure hrv works just fine via health snapshot using the optical sensor. It's disabled if using a chest strap is the issue. The other issue is the two separate hrv tracking options (health snapshot and hrv stress) on the platform which are totally incompatible with one another
Yes makes sense and just tried with my hrm tri with app open and closed and did not work. Worked without strap but only with app open.
It seems to me that Garmin makes a distinction in HRV from the "old HRV tool" and the new HRV_data (see also in the alpha versions: HRV measurement at night).
I also measured HRV with apps and the old Garmin tool with the Polar H10 until I got rid of the Polar junk (sorry, but worst chest strap I ever had).
Makes sense too because I have a hard time imagining optical and electrical data being comparable here.
they're not just comparable, they're indistinguishable. there's no difference in data quality from optical or chest strap (or phone camera for that matter) as it records HRV. i've read enough data briefs from marco altini and others to be convinced of that and would point you to all the research out there to see for yourself.
