GPS accuracy : Default is better than multiband !!

Hi,

It tried Multiband GPS on a 200m track run and it is less better than default sat configuration. I was expecting a better result but distance and track fidelity are not so good like with the default setting.

However, I am impressed of GPS accuracy (default settings) compared to the Fenix 5X Pro I ended returned because GPS accuracy was so bad. Now it is without any doubt far better with my Fenix 7X.

I am in a city with towers, so may be Multiband i snot efficien in this area, however I was understanding that this city configuration was a friendly use case for multiband sat use.

Do you know if there is a solution to see if the watch is effectively using Multiband ? I don't know how to check it. I just configured it in settings.

  • I agree, i have the Fenix 7 and juste "default settings" (no multiband). I'm also impressed of gps accuracy compared to my previous Fenix 6X.

  • multiband is meant to help in really difficult GPS areas such as cities with lots of high rise blocks and signal reflections, also in dense wood etc. Its not meant to be better than single band when in good gps reception areas.

I personally haven't tested it, so cant comment on it, but in normal all satellites mode I find the 7Xss to be pretty accurate so far.

  • Yes I used it in diffcult areas with towers arround me and I was expecting to it better than default settings. The result is not so bad but I don't understand what multiband brings with Fenix waches. The idea is very good and it seems implémentation is not optimal. Hope to see improvement in next updates.

  • I observed the same with my Vertix 2 (same chipset) and not using multiband gave better results. I guess the vendor of the chipset needs to do some work in their firmware to improve it.

Anyway, the tracks were much better than those from my Fenix 6x. So I'm waiting until a few showstopper bugs (for me) are fixed in the Fenix 7 and I'll place an order.

  • Hi. Can you share some activities for comparison or seeing the performance?

When multiband thing was first started to be seen in user devices, those 30 cm accuracy words etc. were possible after waiting at the same location for some time. However, we don't use Garmin watches to wait at a location for half a minute. We walk, run, ride etc. constantly moving. So I don't know how good these current chipsets is and how they can make us of multiband in constant movement.

Yeah, it's not simply marketing, it helps but still it may not help these devices to be a professional GNSS device.

  • I think the subject of this discussion is a bit confusing, "Default is better than multiband". The default Satellites setting in the run mode, is whatever we set default Satellites settings to in the General Settings. If we set the Satellites setting in the general settings to multiband for example, the default Satellites setting in the run mode will be multiband. For this reason, we should be comparing either GPS only or All satellites with multi band, not default vs multiband.

My question therefor for each of you who have agreed that default is better than multiband, what is your default or general Satellites setting?

  • Default out of the box is All Sysstem, thus general consensus is that this option is compared here.

  • I believe the default is GPS All systems.  My question would be would anyone know what the best setting would be for Open Water Swim (OWS) where the watch is submerged in water then comes up for air.  So its needs to as quickly as possible connect to a sat when the hand is out of the water, before it goes back in the water.  Would just GPS keep it simple and thereby connect quickly, or GPS All Systems or GPA All Systems + Multi Band?

  • I use All Systems + Multi Band and 1s recording. It’s very easy to see the tracks are much smoother on the Epix/F7 compared to F6 and distance is always within cooee. I have not used any other setting for OWS to see if it is better or worse. Might have to give it a go with a different GPS setting.

  • interestingly, it's same story too in coros vertix 2 , whereby all systems single band is far better than all systems multi-band.. probably it's airoha chip uniqueness
