Trail Run - Routes - Off Course Alerts even when toggled off

After creating a route and using it during a trail run I am getting Off Course alerts even though I have them toggled off in the settings.  Anyone else noticing this or have the solution.  It's also annoying that they happen when I'm actually on the course so every few minutes I keep getting "Off Course" "On Course" vibration  + chime notifications.

  • It looks like this issue - getting off course while actually being on course - has been inherited from Fenix 6. I am still waiting for my Fenix 7X, but my experience with 6X is that I get those erroneous off-course alerts often while trail running, especially at sharp turns or if I stop for whatever reason, for example to tie laces.

  • I agree with what you stated as that was an issue on dating back to the 6 and that issue is why I turn Alerts to "off".  The problem is I'm still getting alerts even when they are toggled off and it's very annoying.

I was on a mini incline, a set of stairs going straight up the side of a hill, and I was getting off course alerts.
    1.  I clearly wasn't off course and there was no way to be confused by a sharp turn (or any turn for that matter on a straight stretch going up stairs on the course)

    2.  I had alerts toggled off so why am I getting them?  Both chime and vibration

Hopefully Garmin addresses this unless there is some secondary setting I'm not seeing??

  • I suspect there is something wrong with the algorithm. As I mentioned above, my 6X very often goes off-course when I stop for whatever reason, for example to tie laces. If I look at the map on the watch, I am still perfectly right on the course.

Here is what I suspect. I think the course is represented as a series of points and the watch expects you to always move towards each next point after passing a previous point. If the distance to the next point increases for whatever reason it declares you as being off-course. When stopping or moving very slowly, it is possible for the GPS position to start wobbling around, potentially moving slightly in the opposite direction or moving enough to the side to increase the distance to the next point. The same likely happens at a sharp turn if a next point isn't at the tip of the turn. At some point you'd inevitably move away from the next point. I think the algorithm has very low tolerance for the GPS inaccuracy, and that is the problem.

  • I'm not seeing this issue.  Be sure to go to "Navigation > Alerts > Off Course (off) and Turn Prompts (off or on).  You might also look at the course (once it's loaded in the trail run) and check the Navigation Settings (hold menu) scoll down to Navigation Settings and be sure Alerts are set the way you like them.

  • Thanks, kbstone.

I've done both, but still get Off/On course alerts when I have alerts set to "Off".  It's pretty frustrating and I"m not sure why it's happening.

Before my last trail run I've confirmed that both "off course" and "turn alerts" were set to off.  I don't get turn alerts, but "off course" still happens.

  • I am experiencing the same problem. Doing a course on a trail run with the "off course" and "turn prompts" alerts turned off, yet I still get the chime and vibration alert. I agree - it is annoying.

  • I'll also echo the same problems in hope of a fix. I have turn and off course alerts set to off on my Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar (v8.21), the off course alerts still persist as of yesterday

  • I get these ‘off course’ alerts also, even though they are toggled off. Very frustrating. Might be a bug in the latest software update? Before when they were toggled off I only got the ‘on course’ alerts which was still annoying. But now the option to turn the alerts off doesn’t do anything. Hope this is resolved and we will be able to turn the course alerts off completely. Especially bc at switchbacks the watch often thinks you are off course when you are in fact still on the trail.

  • Yeah it sounds like a persisting bug. I updated to v8.37 when it went live, and had these alerts still happen last week and today (still have everything toggled to off). Switchbacks are definitely the worst part, I've even found that when I swing my arm far enough away from the trail, I get an alert. I may have to switch off the mult-iband GPS, but I have a feeling the alerts will continue Disappointed

  • Tactix 7 Standart, FW 8.37, Hike activity - same issues. I hope this simple bug will be fixed soon, it's really annoying.
