fenix 7 wifi sync failed

what's the issue?

1. watch takes quite a while to connect to the wifi network (approx 30 seconds)

2. watch successfully connects to the wifi network

3. however, sync failed

4. and there is no reason given by the watch or the phone for the failure.

5. Bluetooth sync works just fine (slow like always..)

shouldn't syncing be a trivial issue in 2022?

  • Actually my Fenix 7, which is not stable over WiFi is connected to Andorid Connect app.

The Fenix 7S that has no issues is connected to an iOS Connect app.

    Both latest official firmware

  • No luck Disappointed

I have opened support ticket at Garmin. Seems like a hardware issue, especially when a Fenix 7s has no issues on same network.

Just hope that they will replace it with a new one, not refurbished. I have the watch for only two weeks ....

  • Hello

I have solved my issue with Garmin Support, basically discovering a bug when inputing the passoword from Connect for Andorid.

When I set the wifi from Garmin Express or by manually entering the passoword using the watch itself, all the issues went away.

I tested several times, playlists of hundreds of songs in Spotify and no glitch.

Also network that I could not even connect to in the past, not it connects.

There seems to be no issue with Connect for iOS also, just with the Android version.

  • what solved the issue for me was changing 2 configurations on my wifi setup:

    1) enforce 2.4 GHz on all connections (i.e. all devices on the network)

    2) enforce a fixed channel number between 1 to 11 instead of letting the wifi choose it automatically

i'm not sure why Garmin do not explain this in the guide, but for me, this is what solved the issue.

  • Fenix 7 Solar Sapphire failed sync but uploaded to connect app.

Finally figured it out as WiFi syncing was what was failing.

This was still an issue through the connect app on my fenix 7 solar saphire 2022. I Just connect to wifi using the watch and it fixes itself not the connect app.

  • Same issue here.  None of the suggested fixes work:

    • Have set up an SSID with only 2.4G, no password and as few "bells and whistles" as possible (also tried one with only wpa2 and a very simple password).
    • Have tried set up the wifi network both directly on the watch and using the Android app.
    • Have made sure the fenix 7 has full internet access, with special "allow all" firewall policies for the IP-adress it gets from DHCP.
    • Tried to remove the fenix 7 from my account, factory reset it, and join it again to my Garmin account and then set it up with wifi.
    • Tried to join the beta program, and is currently running v11.25 (I joined the beta program because it did not work on v10.whatever was the latest before I joined the beta).
    • I have also tried to connect it to "internet sharing" from my phone, but it is still not able to sync.

I can see that it connects to the wifi network, and I can see that it receives an IP-address from DHCP.  I can _sometimes_ see that it does a couple of DNS requests, and on a few occations it has even sent a http request ot two to some garmin.com addresses.  But mostly it never send ANY IP-traffic at all after getting the DHCP address.

And if it does, it stops accepting packets after a few seconds, and also stops responding to ARP-requests.

  • Hello

I agree, the issue with WiFi is still not fixed. Terrible for such an expensive device not to have basic functionality working.

I would say that I noticed that sometimes it does work if I disable the Bluetooth (connection to phone) on the watch.

  • Thanks for the tip.

It seemed to work slightly better when I disconnected the phone, but only temporarily.  I got a green "Sync complete" a few times, and it found that there are map updates available.

I then tried to connect to USB to dowload maps, and after that, it will not connect to Wifi again (even with the USB disconnected).
Tested now both at work (Mist Wireless) and at home (Unifi).

There just does not seem to be any way to keep watch connected to wifi.

  • Yesterday I came home, and plugged it in to USB and it suddenly started syncing the maps.  However - since the wifi chip is so slow, and the map of Europe is 12 GB(!) it did not manage to complete the sync, but failed after about 10%.

After that, I have not been able to reconnect to the wifi at home again.

Tonight, I turned wifi and bluetooth sync off on the clock, and left it disconnected until this morning.  But I am still not able to connect to the home wifi again.

What seems to be happning is that each time the watch wants to do anything related to wifi, it will first dissociate from the SSID, even if the controller and AP already has it connected and everythin seems perfectly fine.  It will then do a full reconnect, ask for DHCP, get an address, and then, 9 out of 10 times, it simply won't do anyhing more.
I have done packet dumps on the APs, on the DNS-servers and on the router, but not a single packet is sent from the watch after it has reestablished the connection to the wifi and received its DHCP address.

I can remove and re-add the wifi networks.  I tried to reboot the watch with wifi off and wifi on. I tested doing a wifi sync _before_ starting map download and after... But the precedure with full disconnect and reconnect and then complete radio silence just repeats every time.

  • The network connection (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth ) is a mess since 11.25 firmware. Worst and worst from garmin and for expensive watches.
