Change the bluetooth device name

I have a fenix 7 and use Bose sport earbuds. When the earbuds try to pair, they are looking for a device named "REDPINE_GATT_V02" which takes forever because each single character is spelled because it is uppercase. With my Forerunner 945 it was only "watch". I couldn't find any place to change this. This is not the "nickname" I gave my watch in Garmin Express / Connect. I searched several FIT-files on the watch for this text but couldn't find it. I can't change this name in the Bose App neither. I think this is the bluetooth broadcast name of my watch. On a PC I would change it in the bluetooth settings but I don't know where to change it for my fenix 7.

Thanks in advance

Chris

  • if so many people reached out here with this issue, i am wondering, how many are frustrated are yet out there

i have absolutely the same issue with Bose Tempo sunglasses and epix2.

more to that: those sunglasses are quirky themselves (they don't support 2 connected devices, which is, basically, standard but sad) and there is no way to connect watch to sunglasses if my phone is already connected. but that is not sunglasses fault. the issue is on the watch side, they just can't connect if action is not reciprocal (if BT device is not trying to connect same time watch are). and more to this: most of the time when some handshake stuff is messed up during connection (i.e. if i disconnect phone while connecting sunglasses to watch) the BT controls (volume/play/pause) do not work. sometimes during run watch just lost connection to headphones. i had no issues at all with my phone and same BT devices. the bluetooth on these thousand dollar watch is a complete mess!

the bluetooth and internal memory for music was the factor which made me choose this particular watch. i don't want to take my phone for a run, this should've been my compact, ridiculously expensive mp3 player, but it thrives to be a fitness tracker... which is nice, but i don't really need

maybe someone has reached to Bose to turn off that disgusting voice though? that could be a bit of relief

  • Hi. My workaround is to turn off the voice prompt of the bose earbuds in the bose app.

  • Seems Bose BT stack is fubarred and I don't think Garmin are likely to fix it. I guess its a single use case .. ie non of my Bluetooth headphones (5 different pairs ) do it . My most chatty headphones just say connected or 2nd device connected. Trying to read out the broadcast address is always going to cause issues without proper text to speech capability which a Bluetooth battery device is not going to have the processing power to deliver.

So I think the correct statement would be the Bluetooth on these Bose devices is Non-standard and unlikely to function correctly with any properly implemented BT stack.

If I was you I'd contact BOSE and ask how to define what the headphones/glasses report as connected to, As the watch will always correctly only broadcast its unique ID (else you'd be connecting to everyone's watch called 'watch' Slight smile

Having said all that "REDPINE_GATT_V02" is the name from Silicon Labs Demo BLE connection to IOS

    https://www.silabs.com/documents/login/application-notes/BLE-Application-Notes.pdf

So good chance Garmin developers have been a bit lazy .

and my point on non unique connecting (ie using 'name')

  • Same here with my new Fenix 7 Pro and Bose Sport Earbuds. Used to be "watch" with Fenix 5+. Annoying.

  • Hi there - same Problem here.

It is not only the spelling out. It also shows the name in the bose connect app in the device list which is confusing. With the fenix5s it was only watch.

Would love to the Option to rename the watch

    Regards

    Nina

  • In addition I'd like to mention, that maby the bose connect app just reads out the wrong Name. As my Android Phone is able to show me it is connected to my fenix 7s and dosn't mention the REDPINE_GATT_V02.
