fēnix 7 - Wireless Earbuds Bluetooth Connectivity

Interested to hear from any fēnix 7 owners who've streamed music/podcasts during a GPS activity and can comment on the stability of the connection?

One of the major frustrations with my fēnix 6 is the constant dropping of connection with true wireless buds as soon as I commence a GPS activity. I'm wondering if this is solved in the fēnix 7 and whether there's a newer firmware or revisions to the BT chip?

  • In your case it sounds like a broken watch so you should contact support. Your description doesn't match the general problem most people have, and over ear headphones are generally not problematic. Sometimes watches are faulty, Garmin do support these very well.

  • Maybe, but I have read several posts in several forums explaining the same problem as I’m experiencing it. I will try to reach out to Garmin directly as well

  • I’m having the same issue. Just bought the Fenix 7x, updated the software, connected my Beats Fit Pro earbuds, and went for a run. After about 10 minutes, lost sound. I know my watch seemed to be playing music and my earbuds seemed to be working. Just couldn’t hear anything…

  • I'm also having those issues with different headphones.  I also got an offer to replace the watch but at the same time the support already told me that this might not change the situation. So I did not opt for the exchange.

All problems only occurs within activities. When walking and just using the watch as a music player it works. As soon as I start an activity it starts with the issues that so many people report and often also lead to a restart of the sensor-hub (e.g. ANT+ devices also disconnect).

Currently only my Anker A1  work during activities (I had to re-pair them a few times until they worked flawless; no idea what might cause that randomness in success).

As you can imagine, I keep a lot of care of those already a bit older Ankers :-)

I hope that 9.33 makes things better but I doubt it to be honest.

  • I'm having exactly the same issue but on my Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar! I was using some Boltune earbuds on the Fenix 5 plus and had no issues ever! I used the same ones on the 955 and they keep losing connection to the watch! I then bought some Earfun free pro 2 (silly name but very good buds). They worked for a couple of runs but today on the latest software version they dropped out about 10-15 times in 1 hours! I can connect them now and listen for 2 mins then they lose connection! I just assumed my watch has faulty bluetooth hardware. This does rather render the watch not fit for purpose! Not good at all on a £550 watch to have such bugs - I have contacted support who have not been able to suggest anything to help resolve this issue. Is this known bug with the watch?

  • New report. Since I purchased my new EPIX in February, I have had almost perfect Bluetooth connectivity playing music with Aeropex headphones. I am a heavy users with 6 runs per week, 4 of those with music for 45 minutes each, along with multiple other Ant sensors (external heart rate and/or Stryd). Yet the EPIX bluetooth+music had always performed great, a billion times better than any prior Garmin (945, 945LTE) which suffered from regular music drop outs.

But starting with 9.31 beta (I did not try the earlier betas) and continuing with the GA firmware 9.33, I have - over the past 2 weeks - had about 3 momentary cut outs, plus 2 times the music stopped playing entirely. I was then able to pause my run, power cycle the headphones, and get music to play once again. But this seems like way more than a coincidence to have multiple issues in a short time after many MONTHS of solid bluetooth+music performance on this exact hardware combination (EPIX+aeropex) and no other changes.

  • I have experienced very similar behaviour with my F7X SS, something has definitely changed in the 9.2x/9.3x releases which has impacted stability.

  • I tried some different things on the 955 last night! If I disable Phone Connected guess what!!!! Music plays fine (or at least seems to be 100% ok). As soon as I leave music playing and re-enable the Phone Connected - within a very short space of time the music stops and the bluetooth connection to the earbuds lost! If link back to the earbuds and continue the music it soon stops again! So this seems to be a workaround for me for the moment! But my concern is still do I have a faulty unit or just a lack of testing on the software!? I assume the software was tested well in beta mode so I assume I might have a faulty device?

  • Yes, these work pretty much perfectly as I use them myself. Certain firmwares have caused minor weird issues like the touch on the ear buds to stop working occasionally but you can just use the watch interface instead if that happens. It's not common though so I wouldn't worry about it.

I bought these as my jaybird vista earbuds didn't work with my previous Fenix 6 Pro, constant dropouts etc.

  • With the watch paired to both my phone and earbuds, and having started music playback before leaving the house for a run (phone left at home, but still in range and connected) I have had the playback stop completely, (on a few occasions) owing I believe to a notification coming through on the phone (from my Ring doorbell) being relayed to the watch.

I'll try turning off Bluetooth on the phone next time to see if this makes a difference.
