So... which Fenix 7 did you buy?

Hello fellow Fenix 6 forum alumni, and newcomers alike!

Which Fenix 7 did you end up deciding on? What made you pick it?

I picked the 7X Solar Sapphire, in Carbon Gray DLC. I couldn't decide between that or black, because I could honestly not really tell the difference in the pictures, and I had to pick something, so I picked Carbon Gray purely because I *think* it most closely resembles the 6X Sapphire DLC look? I guess we'll find out.

My reason for picking the 7X Solar Sapphire is pretty simple - I want it ALL Slight smile Every other model leaves something on the table feature-wise, and I didn't want to make any sacrifices. And coming from the 6X, I know it'll fit my wrist just fine.

  • My 7x Sapphire carbon gray just arrived, and it is BEAUTIFUL!

The carbon gray is a tad bit lighter than the old 6X sapphire. I actually like it a lot better, it's kind of a "gun metal" type color. Perfect balance between subdued, and flashy. I definitely feel like I picked the right color (I had also been considering black when I ordered it).

Honestly I even like the look of the solar ring. Coming from a non-solar 6X, I didn't know how I'd like it, but I actually think it looks great.

The sapphire lens also looks great. There have been a LOT of complaints about it being too dark and too reflective in the 7X, some even saying it's worse than the fenix 6 sapphire. I'm just not experiencing that myself, it looks exactly the same as my 6X sapphire lens did. It is PERFECTLY readable indoors - every bit as readable as the 6X sapphire was. I'm still giving it its first charge, so I haven't had a chance to take it outdoors yet.

Super happy with my decision to pick this watch. I was honestly starting to have buyer's remorse for a while there, after seeing all the excitement about the Epix display, and people saying the 7 Sapphire was terrible. I think that was hugely exaggerated, in my opinion.

Anyways, I love it so far! Absolutely thrilled with my purchase. I've got a carbon gray DLC titanium band showing up later today as well Slight smile

  • Great to hear all the awesome first impressions! Mine is on the delivery truck GrimacingGrimacing

  • I haven't bought, and may not, making this the first Fenix I haven't bought in a few years.  I also sold my 6X so I'm Fenixless at the moment.  That said, I'm housebound for 2 more days and can't workout for 2 weeks (not C19) so for what it's worth, my thoughts.

Looking at the Fenix, and reading about the Sapphire reflection, really limits my options there.  I had a sapphire 6X and hated it because of the glare and reflection.  The GG was massively better.  I also liked the 32GB of storage, which forces you to sapphire.  I do like the battery life, however, because I hate charging the AW7.  I'd like to get a week and charge / reload podcasts once/week.

This leaves the Epix, but, here I did some math.  I run / workout roughly 4 hours week (walks, hikes, runs) which is 40% of the battery if I listen to music / podcasts.  Add in GPS, normal usage, and even with gestures off, it would be a stretch to get to 7 days.  It might, I just don't know.  It does have a better screen, however.  I think it's the better choice.

But, wait, there's another road here.  Buy a second Apple Watch.  Two AW7's, non-cell, cost $898, actually less than any of the Fenix / Epix's I'm considering.  Two AW's, and the charging problem is gone.  Since I run workout with music / podcasts, even the battery life is barely worse than a  Epix.  Music destroys Garmins but AW's, not so much.

Anyways, just thinking out loud here.

  • I came from a Fenix 5, after much reading decided on the Fenix 7X Solar Saphire. Defintely made the right choice, decent battery even with everything turned on highest accuracy on the gps. Few stories of screen burn on the AMOLED screens put me off along with the battery life not being quite what id want. Plus id never found the Fenix 5 screen lacking so an better version on the 7X would be even better.

  • my wrists are about 14.5 cm, but if you are doubt go and try it out in a shop first

  • Just got an email this evening that mine is shipping from Best Buy, that was very pleasantly fast! Should be here by Thursday!!

  • I've read some comparisons F7 to Epix and the Epix is winning.  The Epix duration is much less than the F7, but it's still respectable and it's display is excellent, even it's a little smaller.

  • Can you share a pic? I have a 5-7 week wait Disappointed

  • Also got the 7X solar sapphire, upgrading from a 6X sapphire (non-solar), before that I had the 5X Plus, the 5X, the 3.

My first take is (for me) it's a very minor upgrade, maybe one I actually regret, and here's why:
    - Identical (I think?) size/weight as the 6X, whereas the 6X was definitely less clunky that the 5X Plus. I knew that buying the 7X though.
    - Solar is a gimmick. I always got the X's in the lineup to have max battery for ultra marathons, but unless you do proper expeditions, I dont know what the use of solar is. Also I dont like the solar ring. It feels like the space could have been used to expand the screen (wouldnt mind more pixels for navigation/maps, also a reason why I've gone for X's in the past.

    - Touch is a gimmick. First thing I did when I got the watch is disable it. It's much faster to navigate menus using buttons.

Given how good batteries have become in recent iterations, and PulseOx/Music/Navigation is available on all models, I almost think a 7 non solar would have been the better choice for me. Or no upgrade at all. Yeah, maybe just not upgrade at all. Evolution from here should be smaller packages, otherwise it becomes a smartwatch and drifts away from the sportswatch category.
