Important FYI, regarding Fenix 7 Sapphire vs. Non-Sapphire

It's not obvious when looking at the products on Garmin's website, but before you place an order, there are two important differences to know about Sapphire versus Non-sapphire.

  1. Sapphire models have 32 GB of storage, and pre-loaded with worldwide topoactive maps. Non-sapphire has 16GB, and only pre-loaded with the topoactive maps for your region (you can download more onto it, but I'm not sure if additional ones are free or not)
  2. Sapphire models have MultiBAND Multi-GNSS. Non-sapphire models have single-band multi-GNSS.

So, anyone who is "on the fence" about getting sapphire, you should be aware that buying the Sapphire upgrade gets you a lot more than just the lens.

  • Hope that in Epix 2 Sapphire this isn't so bad thanks to Amoled

  • I have just invented a new game - spot the sapphire...sorry no prizes as it's obvious...but the serious point is why is sapphire glass tied to the mutli-band 'GPS'...?

  • Very difficult. I really can’t find themInnocent (j/k)

  • There is the other difference of memory. If we want to use the watch for music and maps how much space is left over for music after loading North America?

  • Generally speaking with the 6 series with maps, you have had space for 500 mp3 files + map space for your region. Maps actually don't take up huge amount of space if you look at the .img files on your current watch.

You certainly wouldn't be able to fit in worldwide maps, but is there really much use-case for having maps for 95% of the other parts of the world most people are unlikely to visit? (and if they do, just download them as before)

It all feels like 'differentiation' for the sake of it, pushing people up to more expensive watches with features they either do not need or do not want (sapphire in my case)

  • From DC Rainmaker review(not sure if he took it from Garmin website or he checked them).

TopoActive Australia & New Zealand: 1.8GB
    TopoActive Africa: 4.4GB

TopoActive Hong Kong & Macau: 17MB (yes, megabytes)

  • Quite impressive! What bothers me most about this is that Garmin is not able to applicate a decent antireflective coating to their most expansive watches. If you take a look at the FR945, you can see a crispy and bright screen due to a/r coating.

And my FR945 is two years old and has not a single scratch on it. So - its no rocketscience! And its very necessary, especial on sapphire lenses.

There are many watches with sapphire lenses in the market, which provide very good a/r coating. The optical impression when you see it is quite impressive. You hardly can see the lens, its such a pleasure to look at such a watch.

By the way, in this video https://youtu.be/kKEPxOGuknc

you can see another Fenix 7x review. Special about it: Whereas the Fenix shows many reflections, there is not a single reflection from the reviewers glasses in the whole video. So thats the way :-)

  • Do you want to avoid scratches or be anti reflective?  Saphire is how it avoids scratches cause it is so hard, an anti reflective coating is on the outside where the reflection is but is also prone to get scratched.

  • Just read once again carefully what I wrote about the FR945. No scratches so far in two years, so its possible :-)

At the price tag of a Fenix I just would expect not to look into a mirror instead of the dial.

  • Can anyone speak to the difference in the visibility of the screen between the two?
I have a 935 now that I've worn basically 24/7 since it came out and only a single minor stratch on it.  This makes me feel like I don't really need sapphire.  I do like being able to glance at my watch when it vibrates to see what the notification from my watch is about so love how its readable in low light without a backlight and not having to look straight on.  From reading through posts it sounds like the sapphire would be a bad pick to be able to do that.  Is that right?
