Diving activities in Garmin Fenix 7

Hello everybody

Wouldn't you like the Fenix 7 to have some possibility of diving activities?

I know that the Garmin Descent MK2 exists and I think it is a wonderful device, but I am not going to dive more than once or twice a year, and that if I am lucky.
So I can't justify the money to buy one.

So I think it would be a good opportunity to include the most basic functions of the Descent MK2's dive computer and put them in the Fenix 7 (we are talking about no mixed gas dive and basic apnea).

I know this is possible, in fact, I used a Garmin IQ downloadable app for my Fenix 5s and it worked like a charm, just like my dedicated dive computer.

This would be a great reason to buy a Fenix 7.

  • After Garmin releases the Fenix 7 I expect they'll eventually also release a Descent Mk3 with the same features plus diving. So if you're a diver then you can just wait a few months and buy that new Descent.

I have a Descent Mk2 and it's a great device. But Garmin had to make some design compromises to achieve the necessary water resistance rating and squeeze in an accurate depth sensor. Compared to a regular Fenix 6X the case is larger, it weighs more, and the battery capacity is lower. I expect most Fenix customers don't care about diving and would prefer a smaller, lighter device with better battery life.

  • I really don’t think so. The MK 2 is just new released and I don’t think, that we will see a MK 3 for the next two years. But if it took some more years until the F7 will be released, you may be rightStuck out tongue winking eye

  • I was responding to this:

without making the proper (more expensive) hardware and performance upgrades necessary for a diving computer, then lives could be at stake. It would be a massive liability issue for Garmin.

Have you read the dive warnings on page 2 or the disclaimers in the manual? There is nothing on the Descent watch that if it were to fail, that Garmin would take responsibility.  Liability isn't an issue here as their lawyers have this covered with disclaimers.  This can simply be added to the manual of any device.

If Garmin added software features to a Fenix marketed it as a dive computer, without making the actual hardware investments/changing needed to serve that function, it would absolutely be a liability, and one that most definitely not be able to be disclaimed in a user manual. Without speaking for C.sco, I don't think he was talking about the Descent, since that device IS a real dive computer and is presumably fit for purpose. If a Descent fails, standard product liability claim, maybe a design or manufacturing defect involved, but not the same issue as marketing a non-dive watch as a dive computer.

  • On the previous Fenix Version the Application Apnea was working very well.

But since Fenix 6, Garmin has put "limitation" in its pressure sensor (used as barometer and depthmeter)...
    See their FAQ here:

Been using my Fenix 5X, 5X Plus and 6 for diving and sea activities with zero issue (it is a very sturdy piece of equipment and it was not used as my main diving computer) and I sincerely considering buying a MK2. :-)

Also being an apneist for 45 years this is a very dangerous activity which should not be made alone.
Here is a link to Jean Pierre Petit who has lost his son... JPP is a astrophysicist and a teacher. It's a long read but very helpful to understand the dangers:
    https://www.jp-petit.org/dangers/danger_eng/apnea_eng/apnea.htm

"The question 'how long can I have an apnea before I faint today, having my physical condition, in that water?' can not be answered unless... you experience it. It's highly probable that a great many of times people have been at a fraction of second to death, without even noticing it."
FYI JPP knew very well Jacques Mayol (The Big Blue's main inspiration) and they were diving together.

Here is the French version which has been updated many time since:

Sorry for the long almost Off Topic but as the Fenix is made as a "training" instrument, I thought it was important to point the danger of pushing the limits in that apnea activity. A good friend of mine who was a apneist fisherman for his living in the Pacific Ocean and was as fit as Charles Bronson in his prime has died from an heart attack in his 50's... We were very surprised as he was so fit and careful.
    Quoting JPP:
"Our body is not designed for extreme apnea. Even if a freediver won't have any problem, after apneas of 3, 4 minutes or more, this exercise each time destroys neurons in his brain and especially cells in his heart muscle. Much later he will pay the bill by becoming much more sensitive to a heart attack."

  • I agree. I have a suntoo core that do basic diving until 10m. I would love theses feature (or a little more) in a fenix. Maybe until 20m so that it does not impact the sells of the descent.

20m or 30m is enought for a lot of spearfishing, snorkeling or exploration with a gopro. A suntoo core dive capabilities + load and record gps coordinates, point of interests and dives. A casual diver will not buy a descent.

  • If you think that a written disclaimer completely indemnifies a company from all responsibility you really don't know anything about the law. This is not a video game. A court could find Garmin liable in an incident where their watch error led to an injury

  • I also used dive computer on my Fenix 5x. Just for rough indication when freediving up to 20 meters. Having 7x without this option is disappointing.

  • i don’t want to dive with my F7, i just want to do snorkelling and know how depth i am. I don’t need any certification for this.
