Opinion: I think Garmin should enable affordable battery exchanges for all their watches - just like Apple and Casio do

I have been thinking about this for a while. But to cut a long story short: I just don't think that in these days of (supposedly) environmental conscience, it is okay to design a watch that is basically limited by the life of its battery.

Yes, it's difficult to make a device small and watertight, and still enable the exchange of the battery. But it's perfectly doable. It's possible on absolutely all Casio watches without much trouble, and that is even true for those solar watches with a rechargeable battery that lasts for a decade. Apple also offer an affordable possibility to have the battery swapped, even if one perhaps gets a refurbished device and it takes them some glue to unstick.

And in times of planned obsolescence this is a paradigm change, I know. But I really don't care.

What do you think?

  • Considering the way that Garmin are moving forwards with solar, this discussion may well be moot by the time it's possible to build a rugged watch that can survive a battery replacement without an issue with functionality.

  • The batteries are replaceable and third party batteries are readily available. It is just Garmin that will not sell end users an original battery and provide replacement instructions.

As with any after market [replacement] battery you will need to do your research on which brands and retailers are reputable and which are to be avoided.

Depending on how long you have had the watch you will also need to consider what warranty implications there are, if any.
