Map upgraded become enable in all activity profil

Hello,
I have several map on my fenix 6X pro. I use them on specific activity to have more or less information depending on what i'm doing.
The problem is each time i make an upgrade on one of these maps, it become enable in all my acticity profile. An then I have to manualy desable it on every activity profil where i don't use thise map.
Is that normal ?
Thanks.

  • Side topic - How do you decide which map to use?

For me it's pretty simple - I use a TalkyToaster layer on top of birdseye, when I'm in my region where I have birdseye imagery (and a talkytoaster map). When I'm outside the birdseye regions, then TalkyToaster is all that gets displayed, automatically since the absense of birdseye for those regions simply makes them not appear. Outside of the US (my home country) I just use OSM map layers that I download before I go on a trip. For skiing activities I activate the ski maps, for others I turn them off. And finaly, I've got a fancy Disneyland map that I constructed myself, that I use for my Disneyland activity I mentioned above.

  • Cool. TalkToaster is my favorite as well..

    Thanks!

  • Good idea.. alot of the third party maps even include the positioning on each ride in the parks etc.. While others are best suited for outdoor activities... : -)

  • Yes It would be welcome if we had easier map management.. : -)

I guess it depends for me... for instance if I'm in a town or city I can choose a map with high contrast buildings..... and a map that doesn't swamp the screen with poi text, but provides a good balance of info to map ratio...  : -)

Yep, exactly! when I'm out hiking, I don't necessarily care to have that much detail. I don't need to see where every park bench and water fountain is, and it clutters the screen. But at Disneyland, it's great to have all that on the watch! Can see where the rides are, where the nearest bathrooms and food stands are, and everything. The disneyland map I used actually had too much stuff on it (it had every tree, every trash can, etc marked on the map, so I had to clean it up so it only shows the stuff I care about)

Absolutely 100% agree! It tooks me hours (maybe even days) to figure out how to manage the map features, and required several bits of PC software and a lot of google searches and youtube videos to figure it out. It was quite difficult, and I'm a computer engineer. It would be fantastic if the Fenix had the built-in ability to manage maps in that way.

  • I used to create maps with gpsmapedit for my Vista HCX in the days where openstreetmap was still very new and didn't have much date.

I used to grab every gps file of a nice ride/run/hike that I could find and add it to my map, adding intersections and making it a pretty cool map.

Are you creating a map for disney or just adding custom styles? Wondering which tools/docs you use to start with.

  • Basically custom styles, yes. I made it over a year ago so I  can't remember that well how I did it, But I basically started with a small, cropped OSM (or maybe it was talkytoaster?) map of just the park boundaries and a small amount of the surrounding area, which included a very complete map of all the stuff in the park (rides, vendors, bathrooms, all that stuff) and then used a program, I think gpsmapedit(?), to remove all the garbage I didn't want.

I'm in trouble if I ever need to do it again, because unfortunately I didn't really document it (it was mostly trial and error for a while, and many of the programs I downloaded/tried didn't work) and I would probably need to re-learn how to do it again at this point, haha
