Intensity minutes when passively worn

I have a fenix 6x Pro on Beta 14.72.

I had read that wearing the watch passively (not recording an activity) was enough to generate Intensity Minutes.

I just went for a ride and recorded it as usual on my Edge 530 with HR strap and also wore my fenix 6 just as a watch (not recording) however no IM’s were shown.

Can anyone confirm how this should actually work?

  • I do wear my watch 24x7, removing it once per week for charging and briefly for washing it. My resting heart rate is around 50 BPM, with a walk usually at 80 BPM and up. My Z1 heart rate zone  does not start until 98 BPM, but my intensity minutes are still counted below that zone. Maybe having a solid RHR is the answer.

  • I just went for another walk, same as yesterday and recorded IM, so I’d say it definitely has something to do with wearing the fenix for long enough to establish a baseline average resting HR (if set to automatic, I assume if set to specific zones it would record regardless) so it know where/ what to base its calculations on.

  • Sorry for reviving this old thread, but I thought it's better than to start a new one.

As with my FR945, my Fenix 6 pro shows no Intensity Minutes when recording a Bike activity with my Edge 830. Now, I know that the Edge doesn't record Intensity Minutes (which I think it should...), but my Fenix 6 pro does have this feature. Only it doesn't record any, because my HR is always wrong on the Fenix while biking, I sometimes switch to the HR widget and see something like a HR of 89, while on the Edge (paired with my Polar H10) shows 159 (those figures are just examples). I undestand that optical HR is hard for a watch while biking, but this is ridiculous... My work-around is, that I record an Indoor-Cycling activity on my Fenix while biking and discard it afterwards (the added benefit is, that I also see my resting HR, which I also think should be on a device like the Edge...). It doesn't consume as much Battery as an Outdoor Activity, but still more than if not recording anything at all. I just wonder why I need an Edge for recording the activity, when I still have to record one on my watch to get Intensity Minutes...

When I bought the Edge I thought to have the best of both worlds when biking: my watch as an activity tracker during the bike ride and the Edge for better recording and displaying data.

Has anyone else had this and found another solution? I tried turning my watch on the wrist, tighten the band, etc, nothing helps, HR is always wrong when not in an activity mode...

  • HR is always wrong when not in an activity mode...

This complaint has existed for as long as the 6 series, and maybe before that. Outside of recording an activity the wrist heart rate monitor operates in a power saving mode that cannot cope with elevated heart rates.

If you want anything approaching accuracy then start an activity on the watch. Better yet, use the H10 paired to both watch and head unit. Then, if you're going to discard anything, discard the Edge file instead. That way the watch gets to record and manage ALL your personal physiological metrics, with relative accuracy, 24x7.

By all means use the Edge for the larger display, for navigation and other 'cycling' related things, but make sure the watch has everything available to it to complete the picture for FirstBeat metrics etc..

At least this is my solution. And it works.

  • Do you notice an unreasonably low HR only when using the Edge? For all activities, with or without the Edge? I have encountered this problem only once, a couple of weeks ago (I don't have an Edge). Riding intensely uphill my HR barely hit 80. So I contacted Garmin Chat, was told to delete History, and do a hard reboot (hold Light button long, right through the Emergency contact stuff. Then restart watch. It magically fixed the problem. Good luck.

  • I thought so. It is a pitty though, hoped I could save some battery on my Fenix. Well, I‘ll keep doing what I described.

  • Actualy, no. It‘s not only when using Edge. If I‘m not recording an activity, my HR won‘t be accurate at all, regardless of what I do. I do see it go up sometimes, but most often than not, it‘s too low and inconsistent. I guess that is the Trade-Off for better battery-life…

BTW, I did delete history and have done several soft resets/hard reboots. No change.
