Battery drain after workout since fw 12.20 - reproducible issue

It was some topics re quick accidentally battery drain since firmware update 12.20.

I realised this issue on my f6XPro Solar.

My first observation was when it happened watch is updating watchface every second even for watchface which are not supporting 1hz update, what causes %% of batt every hour.

Now I am pretty sure it can happen after workout. At least it was reproducible three times for three last days.

Conditions:

 - outdoor running

 - HRM-Tri - ANT+

 - inReach Mini connected to watch via ANT+

 - BT headphones + Runcast

 - No Phone for workout time

When I finish workout (running) my phone and WiFi is available, and typically in seconds watch is connecting to the phone (iPhone).

I realised when I finished running watchfaces continue updating every second all the time. Switch OFF -> ON watch temporarily solve issue, but it can happen next time.

As it was a lot of messages from other guys everything is ok, I am going to experiment with different setups, like doing other activities, exclude one by one connected devices etc etc

  • Did more experiments. Outcome:

     - all my outdoor workouts WITH connected inReach mini cause abnormal batt drain when workout is completed.

     - all my outdoor workouts with other connected devices (of course inReach mini was excluded), or no other devices - no issue with batt drain after workout

  • I have also reached out to Garmin.  They have been responsive, and are starting the replacement process.  After  had suggested the other widgets could be the problem I reset with deleting all data.  Charged the watch to 100% at 3:48pm yesterday.  As of 6:37am this morning the watch was down to 95% even with battery saver enabled from 10pm to 6am.  The battery saver had disabled wifi, phone connection, disturbances, but left HR on.  No activities, music, etc were used during this time, just smart watch mode w/ HR.

I'm continuing to monitor, but there's definitely something going on in the background that causes the watch to use power at a faster rate then intended.  As of writing this I'm at 93%.

  • can totally relate. I am having the issue for 4-5 days now. Down to 90% after 1 day with battery saver. Not even HR on. Disappointed

  • Garmin is sending me a refurb'd watch today.  After the reset/charge etc. on 07Dec, still no activities recorded, smart watch only, and battery saver at 10pm-6am, I'm down to 80% as of 10:30am.  Notably, the battery drained from 86% to 82% from 10pm to 6am with battery saver enabled, including phone disconnect, wifi off, do not disturb, low power watch face, but had heart rate on (should be minimal power drain).

At this point, my conclusion is there is some background operation draining power due to firmware update, or the battery in the watch itself has degraded for one reason or another.  I'm hoping the refurb unit fixes this as others have found.  Very odd if it's the battery for a ~1 year old watch.  I've had other Garmin product last 3-5 years without issue.
