Why is the screen so dull on Garmin watches, including the Fenix 6. In bright daylight, it's great. But otherwise and especially indoors, it's dull. But why? I have a couple of old Casios, and they are significantly brighter, as the linked photo sh

  • I use the gesture on only after sunset as it would use too much power during the day, and it's not like I need it always during the day.

  • These are significantly different screens, the Casio ones are simply shaped lights, they're not "brighter", they just have higher contrast, this is because the back is white and the lighted shapes are black, it is completely different to a real screen that can produce images. You probably also compare it to your phone that has a very bright screen, but again it is different technology, the ones that Garmin uses are akin to that of a Kindle where the images are produced without light so you either need outside light (like that from the sun) or the side light when you press a button. Your phone screen uses a lot more energy because there's light coming from every pixel, that's what an amoled screen is. Anyways, Garmin takes a different approach than Apple, they prioritise batter life over the "beauty" of a bright screen, that being said Garmin have released the Venu series of watches that do have a bright amoled screens ala Apple Watch or the Instinct that have similar screens to Casios with high contrast, you can check those out.

  • Meh... it is not so much of a trade off for me, I don't need it to have bright colours or care that much, in fact I would really dislike it if it had an amoled screen, it is like having a constant lightbulb on your wrist, I also dislike it when the screen it is not constantly visible, so for me , the screen on the Fenix 6 is perfect, But if it is that important to you, Garmin do have you covered, if you want a pretty screen ala Apple Watch , they have the Venu series of watches with amoled screens, and if you want the monochromatic "screen" of the Casio watches instead, again, Garmin makes the Instinct series, similar black and white screen. At the end Garmin gives you choices, you should definitely check those two, the Venu and the Instinct.

  • I was not comparing it to an amoled screen, merely asking why the casino lcd screen was brighter. Some have answered the question. Others simply assumed I wanted a pretty, colorful watch face.

  • Worst screen brighness on a watch.

Garmin seem to have forgotten that the sole purpose of a watch is to visually look at it!

Bought 2 months ago so no return. Hammer and binned shortly then back to a proper watch that you can actually see the information on.

  • You took a hammer and smashed your Garmin fenix 6 and threw it in the bin?...seems drastic.

You could have put your brightness up to 100% and been happy..

  • More money than sense! I've never had an issue with any MIP display and outdoors (you know, their intended use) has fantastic visibility

  • Please don't troll the feed...

  • The MIP display is the price of crazy long battery life and always on visibility.

It's a good trade off for some, and not for others, as with most things.

For me, the visibility is fine. If I wanted better visibility and shorter battery life, I would buy an Epix.

  • Just because you have never had an issue, doesn't mean anyone else hasn't. Now back to a watch I can actually see.
