HRV-Stress Test reliable?

Just tried to use the test for watching my training/health level the past 15 days and figured out that it seems not to work. I use the Garmin Dual strap and when I do two test in a row I have one time a value of 54 and on the next test 98 just a minute later (well 4 min including the test) I guess if the test cannot reproduce the same values +/- 5 or 10% it is non sense. I could also throw a dice and say hey great today I am relax I should go for a hard training. Anyone experienced the same?

Guess the heart rate variability should not change within 3 or 4 minutes.

  • hah- neither.  sitting generally.
    I normally stand up.

I ask this because I had very different results if I done standing up or lying down. Standing Up I usually had a number very close to 100.

I tested with 935 and not with F6 but probably the result is the same. I will try it!

  • Without trying to get overly philosophical about this there's a difference between data being accurate/reliable and data being useful/meaningful.

The HRV-Stress Test is a very good example of the difference. I'd suggest that it's a) quite accurate/reliable, but b) not particularly useful/meaningful unless you are willing to commit to performing the test regularly first thing in the morning, before having coffee, in an otherwise calm and quiet environment. You also need to have a good sense of what sort activities, behaviors, and situations can influence your heart rate variability.

For example: Is your HRV lower (HRV Stress Score = Higher) today because you didn't recover effectively or because you are excited on the morning of a big race? Big difference. This particular analysis is fairly similar to the Quick Recovery Test which is part of the Firstbeat Sports professional monitoring platform, and elite programs tend to find it provides valuable information. At the same time, they typically have a professional exercise physiologist / sports scientist on staff tracking results, managing protocols, and interpreting results.

Also, I'm not 1k% positive, but there shouldn't be any issue with the Garmin HRM-Dual chestbelt regarding recording HRV data. At least not if being used with a Garmin watch. It might not transmit the beat-to-beat intervals over bluetooth (some bt belts don't, I think), but I would expect it to work just fine with a Garmin watch paired normally.
