Fenix 6X Pro and GPS on Fly

A lot of vehicles (eg trains) or some airplanes are structurally so isolated that it is difficult to get a stable GPS reception, especially with a wearable.

Similar experience with FR945. Used to monitor speed and gps altitude with previous Garmin watches. Was very excited with the FR945 mapping to be able to monitor flight progress. Unfortunately, once the (commercial) plane picked up speed, my watch could not maintained lock until the plane slowed down prior to landing. I won’t be surprised this is due to the new Sony gps chipset. I know this may be gimmicky, but I am very disappointed.....

That’s blows away my assumption of the Sony gps chipset. What was the activity type you used to record the flight?

There was a post about this some while back before the Sony chipset and some explanation involving bits and bytes.

Being disappointed because it doesn't do something outside of what could reasonably called its 'normal use case' is a little unreasonable.

Hard to see how any watch would pick up the true altitude when cabin pressure is usually held around 3000m...unless of course the Suunto Ambit is not using barometric pressure.

It was the 'Track me' activity and I had a window seat. I am going to try it again next week.

Suunto has a FusedAlti feature which uses the combination of the GPS and Barometric altitude. As far as I remember it's turned on by default, and honestly, it works pretty well.

I wish Garmin had similar features, Suunto's FusedAlti, FusedSpeed, FusedIdontknowwhatelse are quite nice features to provide more accurate results by combining the data of different sensors.

I used to have Fenix 5plus and had no problems using the gps next to window seat and tracked the flight throughout the duration. However, since I've changed to FR945 like you say it does at the beginning and at the end. Last week it recorded about 13 min up to 740 km/h then disappeared.  Like others are saying I think it might have to do with the new sony chip set since FR945 has the same gps as Fenix 6 but different than the Fenix 5 plus gps chip. I also tried to change GPS+ Galileo and Glonass no difference.

That is a pity that Fenix 6 can't do that. My old Fenix 3 can get GPS during flight (when seated next to a window). It's fun ... Well my phone works too ... so no big deal.

Unfortunately, my new Fenix 6X cannot determine the position by GPS, while my old iPad drew a route on the screen
