Goodbye Garmin

I know, I know, “This is not the airport, no need to announce your departure”…

I’ve been a Garmin wearer since the Forerunner 405, and am now wearing an Epix2 Pro. I’ve run a half dozen ultras, a dozen or so marathons, 50+ half-marathons, and countless 10ks and 5ks. I’ve appreciated the running data and ability to push myself to beat yesterday.

I took a break when Apple Watch Series 5 came out and ran with that for a few months. It was OK (and for reference I’ve been a Mac/Apple user since 1984!) and I just liked the features my Garmin offered better than what Apple had back then.

Now, however, Garmin has me fed up with too many bugs, too many hassles, too many price increases, and WAY too many series of watches with WAY too many different software sets. I’m tired of buying a new $1,000+ watch every 1-2 years just to get the latest features. So is my wife.

So we just bought two Apple Watch Ultra 3s, and in our recreational and ‘just staying fit’ running and cycling we’ll be more than satisfied. And we’ll get tons of data we couldn’t have had before with Apple, should we want to push ourselves and train harder — and we’ll get seamless integration with our iPhones and iPads and Macs. All in a package that WILL get updates to match the future AWU releases, and therefore only upgrade watches every 5-10 years.

So long Garmin.

  • The only response I have is this. I have been on these Garmin forums for 15 years. I’ve seen you defend them for a long time. Garmin has changed in the last few years with their emphasis being on selling new watches and not updating new features to the old one. The Epix Pro not getting new features after two years and having to buy another $1000 watch is unacceptable to me. I went with the ultra three and will happily charge my watch every two days. I will not spend $1000 every two years. Apple still supports the watch that they made six years ago with software updates.

  • “I'm not ridiculing your choices at all. I just laughed at you, ridiculing the choices of other people who consider the battery an important factor(i mean, YOU said "it's ridiculous to consider a long battery duration a critical point").”

I did not say that quote you used. Must have been someone else. And BTW laughing at someone IS ridiculing them.

“In my post, i just pointed out the reasons why I(and other people) don't want to charge the watch every day...i never tried to convince you to switch sides...something that i can feel from your point of view, considering that, again, you're saying that the battery argument is ridiculous.”

Again, I never said the battery argument is ridiculous — and I was not trying to convince anyone to do anything  I was simply bitching about Garmin…something 1,000s of people here do

“And i know that the last phrase could be "rude" and that's exactly why i specified that it wasn't meant to be in that way....more of a friendly "don't try to convince me about something that YOU like because i don't like it...enjoy whatever you like but don't try to convince me to do the same...etc".”

Once again, I was bitching about Garmin, like many others here. And I like Apple. I never said or implied you should be like me or do what I do. That’s on you.

“You know...i don't go on Apple reddit and try to convince people to switch to Garmin because the battery is longer or because the watch is looking like a watch instead of a mini phone. I don't care if other people prefer Apple.”

Whew  you’re really beating a dead horse here. Once again: people on these forums bitching about as well as praising Garmin. They also talk about the pros and cons of other brands like Suunto, Apple, etc. No one’s trying to convert you.

“When i tried a Fitbit, i posted on their forum regarding some stuff(bugs, accuracy, etc) but when i decided to switch, i didn't continue to visit it and convince people to try something different. I just move on and try to enjoy what i'm using.”

Right. So you’re telling me not to tell other people what to do…but here you are touting what you do as the best way to go about doing something. Got it. Hypocrisy much?

    “YK ISWIS HAGD.”

    And ISWIS. FO

  • So... when are you leaving?

So, just as many times before, instead of contributing meaningfully to topic at hand, you're trying to discourage any objective and critical discussion about Garmin.

It would be called childish behavior, but since you are much older than that, other words come to mind.

  • Further up thread, I described my argument to you.Garmin Is becoming a greedy company by not updating features to a two year-old watch and instead of forcing you to buy another $1000 or $2000 watch if you want those features. I called that greed. But  keep trying to deflect

  • So... when are you leaving?

My AWU3 arrives today. You do the math.
