I'M OUT

I’ve been using Garmin watches since 2012.. After the news today that my epix pro  two of two years will not be receiving the new updates I’m out. The greed of  this company is out of control. I will not buy another $1000 watch.  Onto Polar or Suunto I go.

  • Exactly. Make sure you spend $1000 EVERY year to get the latest features. Sorry if your watch is 2 years old.

  • You have the watch you paid for with all the features you paid for! It is still supported and still get updates. I really don't see the problem. I don't want the latest unstable updates on my Epix Pro 2!

  • Map screen goes blank? I had a similar issue and got mine replaced.

  • I agree. I am super happy with my Epix Pro 2 and I realize that the features it came with may be the only features it will ever have. That's fine with me.

I find that when Garmin updates the firmware, which it seems to me they do regularly, they fix lots of little bugs. With watches that do the multitude of things these watches do, there are always going to be bugs, but I am satisfied that Garmin is trying to fix them, even if it may not be as fast, or using the same list of priorities, as some of us might like.

  • Maybe it is better, for EVERYBODY, that Garmin just let go old hw/firmware instead of trying (without success) to solve problems by sw. Personally, I believe that it is a better investment.
Currently, I'm completely satisfied with the Epix2 Sapphire (3rd watch after hw failures) even sw wise, as miraculously the problems with the HR sensor just disappeared...
In any case, of course I cannot complaint that I do not have the features that a more advanced and expensive watch has (and being launched 2 years later), I could I???
Where is the greed of Garmin? Maybe it's us, that FREELY payed that amount of money, that are greedy,,,

  • I understand your point. However, every other company supports and watch more than two years from launch. Apple supports their watch from seven years ago. Coros and Suunto also update their watches for many years. that’s why I say Garmin is greedy but if you’re happy, stay with them

  • TBF, Apple has one software for them all. Suunto is the same with the current lineup - minus the Run. Coros I don't know. Garmin has always been a mix of different teams working on different products. Now they combined the Fenix and Forerunner lines into one software.

What do you call supported / unsupported? Fenix 7 / Epix still do get updates. Do they get new features? Unlikely. BUt I hope at least Garmin will iron out bugs for these watches. That's all I want from them: An extremely solid, bug free experience you can rely on.

  • yes everyone wants bug free software. Of course there’s always gonna be some bugs but this forum proves that Garmin has a lot of bugs

  • Now they combined the Fenix and Forerunner lines into one software.

Ppl keep saying this as if it's something incredibly new, but Forerunner 935 and Fenix 5 had similar software / features / UI back in 2017. This was made especially clear if you looked at older Forerunners like 235, which had completely different software / features / UI than their Fenix cousins.

From my POV what's changed since then is that *all* the Forerunner models followed suit in joining the Fenix train, as opposed to just the highest-end Forerunner.

Ppl also make it sound like this has only happened starting with the current gen (Fenix 8 / Forerunner 570 / Forerunner 970) when it's pretty clear that the previous-gen Fenix 7 / 7 Pro / FR255 / FR955 / FR265 / FR965 models all have similar software, UI, and bugs.

TL;DR I think Forerunner and Fenix have shared a common code base for at least 3 years now (Fenix 7 and FR255 were released in 2022). We could also say that the highest end Forerunner models - starting with FR935 - have shared a common code base with Fenix for 8 years.

So to me it's not breaking news, and it doesn't signal a big shift that will magically result in amazing software quality from Garmin. Sure, maybe they have less redundant work now, but afaict, they have as many bugs as before - maybe even more. FR935 had a lot of bugs at release. Somehow sharing a code base with Fenix 5 didn't seem to help at all.

Speaking of big shifts, didn't DCR make a post a couple of years ago about how Garmin was changing its QA and development practices in response to all the bugs? Think he may have mentioned betas around the same time too, although I'm not sure. In the past few years, has anyone noticed an amazing increase in Garmin software quality?
