Epix 2 22.06: Display dimming during activity (7-2025)

Hi,

i know that the topic already was discussed and the final answer was, that it's not to avoid that the display is dimming after a few seconds.

But: I use the Epix 2 as bike computer on the steering bar. Until a few weeks ago, i never had problems reading the display in the sun, now it's absolutely impossible. The difference before/actually is huge. I have to push a button to lighten up - not very usefull. So - during the last weeks, something must have changed - probably with the update to 22.06. Maybe the display was dimming  even before, but not so much? Like it is actually, it's not usable as bike computer anymore, i need to see my heartrate and cadence.

Is there any way to get back the old behaviour?

Settings: AOD during activity is on, no energy saving mode, brightness set to full - didn't change any setting during the last months.

  • wow, i'm jealous. Not to compare with my watch, huge difference. You're sure you're running on 22.06?

Yes, 22.06. I always run the latest available public release software - never any Beta software.

  • This is exactly what all of us want. Can you do the same with navigation screen please?

Tell me exactly what you want to see, and how to set it up on the watch, and I'll see what I can do.

Lacking any further specific guidance, will this do it for you?

  • Same as you just showed, but please choose “road bike” instead of “indoor ride” type of activity, and pick any course before starting an activity. Thank you!

This is a Bike activity following a 15 mile watch-generated course - sorry it's sideways, but that shows the track better:

  • @gaijin: Again - thanks a lot for your efforts to help! Beers

I try to summarize:We have the same watch, running on the same software 22.06 with the same settings but get completely different results, where your results are similar to my experience before updating to 22.06. In my picture, upper row is indoor at poor light, just started and 15 seconds later. The kind of screen doesn't make a difference, it always dims after 15 seconds (time setting for activities) Lower row is outside (on the bike) in the shadow while foggy sky at about 3 pm. In each group, the exposure value are identical. Note: For all pictures, the display was perfectly clean. Just a fingerprint will make it even worse and completely unusable outdoors.

I didn't take pictures in the full sun, as it's even hard to recognize something at full brightness but absolutely nothing dimmed.

So you have a usable device, i have not. But i had it before the update, so there must be a way. No one can tell me that it isn't possible or even dangerous because of hardware, burn in.......

The only chance i see actually for me (and probably many others) is to go back to the former firmware. Does anybody know if there is a way to do that? But even if we could do, it probably wouldn't be a guarantee for success, as the behavior of the watch obviously isn't consistent.

Besides:Also after the update, i get strange effects from the heart rate while doing gym exercises: During the exercise (heavy breathing, the watch shows (on the wrist) a very low heart rate down to 50 bpm (lower then while sleeping) and goes up during the breaks up to 150. This effect showed up even before especially for exercises with certain movements of the arms, but not for other exercises.

  • My watch dims a lot more. The level at which it dims is essentially when it becomes completely unreadable outside.

Does anyone have a link to the previous firmware version? I'm fine with hard resetting my watch to try it out. I've sold my Garmin Edge 830 because I stopped using it, Epix did the job, and now a sudden change in its behavior.

  • I can confirm my watch behaves the same. It's possible to read it with some squinting indoors in a static environment, but there's no chance of doing so outdoors on the bike.

  • I received an answer from support confirming this is a known problem, they will reach out to me when the issue is fixed. This is very frustrating, along with other users comments dropping off the Garmin ecosystem.
