A Few Questions About Using Navigate

So I'm using my Epix Gen 2 (Fenix 7) primarily for hiking. I create my own custom routes (using either Explore or Gaia) and transfer them using Explore. I then call them up via Navigate/Courses when I hit the trail.

1. Is that the best method for creating and following a custom route?

2. Is there any way to change the order of the Navigate submenu so that Courses is at the top. Currently it's the fourth option after points of interest, around me, and back to start. And I don't use any of those options regularly.

3. There seems to be a number of data screens under Navigate which I have no need for. I have created ones that I want and can get them on there, but they get added to the existing, default ones and I really don't need eight screens. Can the default screens be removed? Or can I at least move the map screen up to the top so it's near my custom screens.

Thanks much for any insight.

  • 1. I use the hiking or walking activity. When started you can select a course to follow.

    2. Yes. On the watch scroll down to the last item. There is an edit option. You can reorder, remove and add more not in the list by default.

    3. Yes in the activity you can customize data screens by long pressing the setup button.

    4. Garmin connect app is a more comfortable way to change settings.

  • On my watch:

    1. If I start a new Hike activiity, I'm only presented with data screens. I do not see any secondary option to select a Track that I've created.

2/3. Under Navigate, there are only options for Points of Interest, Around Me, Back to Start, Courses, Round-Trip Course, Activities, Saved Locations, Sight 'N Go, Coordinates and Use Map. There is no Edit option at the bottom of this menu, nor does there seem to be any way to edit the order of these screens.

I can long press on the Navigate menu and am them able to select Navigate Settings/Data Screens, but this only lets me customize the screens I create. These show up IN ADDITION TO default screens set by Garmin.

    4. I agree, and I have done things like add/remove/reorder submenu items, but I don't see any way to address the issues I'm having.

    Thanks.

  • Start Navigation from the menu of the concerned activity (Walking, Run, Hike, Cycling,...). Press and hold the middle left button to get to the menu, if you already started or selected the activity. The list of courses of each activity profile will only show courses of given type (cycling courses for cycling, running courses for running, etc.).  Also explained in more details here:

  • Thanks. And I do see where choosing Hike before selecting a course is helpful. But it still doesn't resolve the glut of data screens that are created.

I just set Hike to have only a single data screen (just Map) and Navigate to have the single screen of Distance. (Then synced to verify the settings took.) But when I then choose Hike and then select my course, there are seven data screens. If I create the custom data screens I want, it blossoms to 11 screens!

Hike shows only 2 if I don't choose a course. Just Map (and a second for my inReach status). So obviously, there are a bunch of default Navigate screens that I can't turn off?

  • Some come from navigate, some might come from climb pro. What screens are there?

  • Ugh. I just got it figured out. Some of the navigation-based screens are treated as data fields, others are options like Up Ahead and Guide and found under the Navigation main menu option. Not the Navigate activity. I guessed I was getting confused between the two. I have since renamed the Navigate activity to avoid this from happening again.

    Thanks for everyone's advice.
