Epix2 back button stopped working - any post warranty fix?

Hi,

with all the frustration with connect+ approach today I went for first swim in the sea on my vacation. I literary just got wet and I noticed screen shifting on my watch. My touch screen shortcut using back button was not responding and then I realized that back button stopped working and the down button is acting as long press. My 1000$ watch is few months past warranty so I guess my migration from Garmin will happen faster then expected. Anyway before that given the cost of the watches, has anybody succeeded with post-warranty repair or a fix? Month ago I replaced TOPO map which is licenced on device, not user, so imagine my anger with Garmin.

Thanks.

Tomas

  • Have you tried the "Soak and Rinse" procedure recommended by Garmin? (Find the procedure here)

Have you contacted Garmin Support to see if they might have an acceptable remedy?

  • That is known issue with bad quality of buttons and them stop working after watch is used in water.

Many people had same issue, it is hardware problem, and you can only ask for replacement. Even if Garmin gives replacement to you, you should know that is very likely it will have the same issue.

  • No and yes, thanks for the tip. Support in my country is not really supportive but I have contacted them.

  • You could try using a scalpel to gently pry the buttons up a little and then hold the buttons directly under running warm water and repeatedly actuate them.  This worked for an Instinct I had, and I have also used the same procedure to help free up sticky buttons on my Epix.  I also doused the buttons in silicon spray on the Instinct which made them way better.  But these suggestions come with the risk of further damage so proceed with caution.

  • Similar issue with my gen2 Epix sapphire. First one failed within 1 month after its first surf session! Replaced under warranty just over 2 years ago my replacement has now developed major issues with back button and the up-menu buttons! Watch keeps randomly switching its display on and cycling through screens causing major battery drain and irritation to me!

$1500 for a “rugged” sports watch that can’t make it past a few years is disgraceful.  Their response was for me to return the faulty device and purchase a refurbished one from them! Unbelievable, I’ll never pay for another device that is so plagued with in resolved design flaws.

thought Garmin was a quality brand you could stand by but seems this is no longer the case.

  • But which model?  epix2 o epix 2 Pro?

  • I had the same problem when doing kitesurfing. I assume this is why they changed the button technology in the Fenix 8 series.
