Running metrics go wrong mid-run

Using an Epix Gen 2 Pro with 20.16, but it also happened on the previous public release. I do not have a phone, HRM+, or any other device with me on my run.

Mid way through my run the running dynamics (cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation etc) will just be completely wrong. Sometimes they come back, often they do not.  At a bit of a loss as to what to do with this to be honest? Anyone else?

GPS tracks just fine, but I can assure you my stride length is not 2.6 metres...

  • To me it looks like your cadence is very low for running (~150 spm), somewhere near the threshold for walking, where the watch's accelerometer switches to the walking pattern, halving the cadence (and hence other data too). I do not mean it is the correct behavior of the watch, I am just explaining what may be the reason. And in the case you report it to the Support, it can help them fixing it.

At a bit of a loss as to what to do with this to be honest?

I suggest reporting it to the Product Support at https://support.garmin.com and insisting on creating a support case, giving you a ticket number that you then post here, in order that other users experiencing the same issue can contact the Support too, and ask to be added to the case.

Otherwise, if you do not want to wait for the fix (which may be indeed quite long), I recommend increasing the cadence by shortening your stride. Not only it will (hopefully) avoid this problem, but especially your running will be more efficient, and your body will thank you too. 150 spm is really very low cadence even for a quite tall person, and you are almost certainly overstriding, killing the efficiency of your running, and putting a lot of strain on your joints, spine, and body in general.

Have a look at some YT videos explaining why the low cadence and overstriding are killing your running:

  • That's a good observation actually! I'll definitely log a support ticket though. I was deliberately going a lot slower than usual today (following a workout that kept telling me to slow down).

It's done it before on my faster runs too though - you can see here my cadence was in the 170 region for this one (this one was an interval, so there was a few sections of rest/walk).

Looking through a few of the times its happened, it always seems to be around 24 minutes into the run.

  • Having run a few times with my HRM+ strap, the metrics on the watch are WAY off.. My cadence when running normally is in the 160 region. All the other graphs show green dots too - so I do think my running is fine... I think the watch's metrics are, for whatever reason, very off.

To follow up I have logged a ticket with Garmin for the issue.
