Step Duration Workout Fields

I opened a support call on this over a year ago, and since then I've kind of just dropped it because I assumed it would be addressed in a future firmware update.  Unfortunately over a year later, this is still missing, and and I'm not really sure why no one ever seems to complain about it.

When doing 'self made' workouts, as opposed to a Garmin suggested workout, if you try to set up a data screen to guide you through the work outs intervals and step timing, there should be field available under 'workout fields' called Step duration.  It exists in the Garmin 955 (wife and one kid have this watch), but is a noteable ommission in the Epix Gen 2 watches, and I'd have to assume the Fenix line-up as well.

This field counts down the time remaining in the current step.  So if you are warming up until lap press, it would 'until lap press'.  If you were doing a 45 sec sprint, once the sprint started it would count down until 45 sec elapsed, and most importantly, when you are in a rest interval you can see the time remaining until the start of the next interval.

Oddly, this field clearly exists within the watch because if you do a Garmin Suggest workout (running or cycling), that field is part of the default screen you see when you do the workout, selected by Garmin by default.

Why would this be missing on such a high end watch?  Is it on the Fenix 8?  I wouldn't upgrade without knowing this as I would use it regularly, and I'm just a frustrated regularly by the fact that it is missing!

When I called support a year ago to try to find out if they renamed it of put it into a different folder of data fields, the most useless rep discovered there was no work-around, and no follow-up on if and when it would be addressed.   I wanted to document in this forum so other people know they aren't crazy when they try to setup custom workouts and can't figure out how to do this!

  • I need this too. I'm experiencing exactly the same. I have to switch between screens because this field is oddly enough not available to use in custom data screens.

  • i have the same exactly data screens in daily suggested workouts and in my personal made workouts, nothing different, i can see the countdown after each interval, and i have the same also in my old forerunner 255, what firmware release have you installed on your watch? im on 22.06 Epix Pro 2

  • Same firmware here, 22.06. The data field I'm missing is the one that titles the step name "Run/Recovery/..." and shows the time remaining in the step of the workout. The screen where this field is on is not present when selecting Run as activity type. It's only shown when you do a workout (custom and suggested).

  • in the workout main data field, i have in the forerunner and in the epix pro the same screen, above the heart rate or pace that i must to follow by the design of the workout, then below at left the time remaining in each step, at the right the meters in the run and below more big the actual pace, what are you missing then? in this screen you can see the time remaining in every interval, i use it every week

  • So what field are

you using in your custom workouts?  Yes the issue is that that the step duration field is placed by Garmin nicely in their daily suggested workouts, but it doesn’t exist as a field to add into your own custom workout screens.  I’ve tried on more than one Epix 2, and I’ve spent more than an hour with technical support confirming this issue.  It’s on forerunners and it’s on my newer Fenix 8.  So post a screenshot of this magic you are supposedly performing.

  • The data field, "Step Time Remaining" doesn't seem to exist, we cannot use it in custom data screens. It only exists and has the step type and time remaining in the screen added by Garmin itself. This is what joehostyn are experiencing on our Epix Pro 2.

  • And the technical name for it is Step Duration, which is what you would find categorized under workout fields on a forerunner or a Fenix 8.

  • How can we bring this to Garmin's attention? Surely they can add it. Since it's available on other models it's hopefully not too hard for Garmin to add it to the Epix Pro 2.

  • I haven’t figured that out yet!  The first big step would be people that are interested should call and open a support call with the purport finding out how to correctly set up your data screen for an interval workout where it can be similar to the garmin stock screen.  Go in with the knowledge this field is readily available on other series of watches, Forerunner and Fenix 8 (I have both in the family so I am very aware that they are). Then complain.  I feel it’s simply an oversight that, now that the watch is getting older they just don’t care to assign any resources to it.

  • in your own made workouts in each interval make an objetive in pace or hr and you will see the time remaining in each interval of the workout as i do and see in the epix pro and in the forerunner 255, i have the same screen
