Lag in os after changing the watch face

Epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire
Trying to use any other watch face than the ones already provided, results in lag in the os. It doesn’t matter if that display design is said to be compatible or who created it - not even from Garmin themselves.
(Examples with the ‘hexacurve’ design from garmin): noticeable lag when swiping to exit back to the watchface; short pause with unloaded watch face (just black) and half a menu.
Using the flashlight shortcut (double press) will take up to two seconds till it turns on/ off.
The lag is especially noticeable since it doesn’t happen with a provided face.
I tried turning it on and off, uninstalling every app and face, updating to latest software, cleaning the cache, completely setting it back. In the end i sended it back to the store and was provided with a new one. Yet it has the EXACT same issue.
So is a 1k watch just not able to use different designs their own manufacturer published on their own app for that product and function properly? Or am I missing something crucial here?

Did anyone else have that issue?

  • So is a 1k watch just not able to use different designs their own manufacturer published on their own app for that product and function properly

Correct. Some watchfaces are more complex than others and watch has CPU so it lags when it needs to show those watchfaces (move away from them or move to them). It affects quite a few watchfaces and is usually accompanied with much higher battery usage.

Regarding general lag in OS, I am not sure that watchfaces can significantly affect that but if your case scenarios show it clearly than it might be the culprit.

  • I doubt that this is a CPU isse for various reasons:

    1) I can’t be the only one who’d complain about that or notice it

    2) i have one of the newer, higer end models and the watchfaces are also said to be compatible with low end models. With that bad of a performance drop these models shouldn’t be able to function at all

    3) the pre installed watchfaces work fine, no matter how much or intense data i want to display. The only difference here is that they are already on there. If there occurs a performance drop, it is not noticeable by eye. So this rules out the data/ complexity.

Also i am always referring to a downloaded watchface from GARMIN, so how can compatibility be an issue?

Please tell me, does that happen with you watch?

  • 1) You are not the only one that complained about the lag on Epix regardless of watchface used.

    2) Watchface that is slow on fenix 7 and Epix will work even slower on Vioactive 3.

    3) Just because watchface is made by Garmin does not mean it is optimized. Stock watchfaces are but other on Connect IQ are not. Garmin issues software for the watch that always has some bugs, what makes you think that they pay more attention to watchfaces. Also, read review of watchfaces that you install (yes, including Garmin ones), you will see other people experiences.

I stopped using Connect IQ watchfaces because they are often visibly slower to respond (lag) and drain battery faster.

Since you doubt it is CPU although you have no other explanation I suggest you ask Garmin for help. They will not be able to help you since Epix is known for a bit of lag, they will say it is normal. But you will learn something in the process.
