Primary race keeps getting deleted

I have been using my Garmin Epix Pro for a year now and noticed that every few weeks the watch forgets the primary race even though it is still there in the Connect app with goal set. Removing it from the app/website calendar and adding it again resolves the bug but it seems the training plan gets reset by this.

I doesn't matter whether the race is the only one in my calendar or there are more races.

Anyone else faling this issue?

  • Thanks for posting.  Exactly the same issue.  Fenix 7.  Also (perhaps related) workouts (not Coach, the daily-for-next-week ones related to primary race) not appearing in Connect calendar.

  • If you had an existing race plan before the recent introduction of Garmin Run Coach and company, it is possible that things got messed up. I know it happened to me as I was setting up a new marathon plan.

The way I fixed weird behavior was to cancel my active plan in Garmin Connect, deleted my events and set everything up back using the "new" Coach.

The cost of doing this was a reset of my training periodization, and it is a bit worse if you go back to Jeff, Amy, Greg's plans.

Although I don't think the downside on training effectiveness is that bad, there is a psychological cost.

Note: things are working normally for me now. That said, I have decided to maintain a primary training plan in parallel to the Garmin Coach. The technology flakiness was a reason, but also the desire to have more traditional workouts like progression runs, hills, extra long runs.

  • Thanks very much Etupes25, glad yours is working OK.  My issue is not with the Garmin Coach plans (which I don't use) but the 7 day ahead workouts that are tied to your primary race.  I can see them on watch but not in calendar on Connect.  They used to appear when I checked "workout" category in drop down on the calendar.  Whether this is tied to my first issue of primary race disappearing from watch occasionally I don't know.

  • When I first got the watch a year ago I did use Jeff's Garmin Coach to start training and finished that. Afterwards I started adding my first primary race and noticed it disappeared after a few weeks which was just a week before the race so I didn't bother with it. But since then my primary race keeps getting deleted from the watch race glance (when swiping up or down on the watch face) while the race is still in the Garmin Connect calendar.

One thing I know is that after finishing a daily suggestion based on your primary race & your set goal, the finish time prediction is recalculated. And 1 day I noticed that after finishing a daily suggestion the finish time prediction changed to 0 and the day after the primary race was gone from the watch. So I suspect a bug in the calculation led to the 0 finish time prediction and the watch couldn't handle that so the race got deleted from the watch without deleting it from the agenda. So I believe the bug is in the daily suggestions and how things are calculated.

Also, I know you can use Garmin Coach to train for a certain distance. I do not think it's possible to use Garmin Coach to train for a race with a set goal (for example half marathon in 2 hours)?

There a significant change with the release of F8. Now there is Garmin Run Coach, which provides the option to use the previous celebrity "Garmin Coach" plans, or to simply follow what was before the Garmin Race Plan (ie, daily suggested workouts when there is an event in the calendar).

I am guessing that the switch from the previous "generation" to the current one could mess up the calendar.

This is why you could try to delete your events from your calendar, and set them up again using the new Garmin Run Coach user experience, in Garmin COnnect web or mobile.

Yes, when you kick off the new Garmin Run Coach, it will go through three options, including one about training for an event with a goal. Later, it might provide the option to use the previous generation Celebrity plan, if available, or stick with the previous Garmin Race plan with a goal.

The benefit of the new generation is that you enter everything in the same set up, instead of creating an event in the Calendar with goals and setting up your preferences for the DSW on the watch. Also, you can customize your training history (mileage, pace) instead of letting the watch use your history.

  • Thanks.  After much deleting and re-entering it seems OK now.
