Why are Epix Pro maps updated in Express but still queued and available on watch?

Epix Pro 2 Sapphire with latest firmware 18.14.

Map Manager states that all maps have updates available or are queued.

Yet Garmin Express says that all maps are fully installed and up to date.

Every time the watch is plugged-in to charge, a 'Start Map Download' prompt appears.

The download then takes 6-7 hours to download, before always failing with the 'Map Sync Failed' message.

This is happening repeatedly on a daily basis and is totally unacceptable.

The watch has 19.7GB of onboard storage available.

I will be returning it if this is not resolved.

  • Garmin Express says that all maps are fully installed and up to date.

The problem has already been discussed in their threads. My suggested solution (which has helped others) :

Connect the watch to the PC, use windows file explorer to find the file "garmindevice.xml" on the watch and delete it. Then remove the watch from the computer and restart the watch (switch off and on).

Then check the MapManager on the watch to see if it still displays this error message.

Let us know if this suggestion was successful for you.

  • Thanks for your input and I appreciate your efforts to assist with this issue.

I have deleted the garmindevice.xml file and powered the watch off and on as you advised.

Upon plugging it in to charge again, the same erroneous "maps download" message appears.

Then in map manager, various irrelevant and unnecessary map downloads are "queued".

When any given map download then reaches 100%, the "Map sync failed" is shown.

What is the solution to stop these repeated download failures and errors?

  • Would someone please advise how to prevent this Epix 2 Pro from repeatedly attempting and failing to download unneeded maps every time it is plugged in for charging?

  • Interestingly when I try this I don't see a garmindevice.xml only a garmindevice.html. I tried deleting that and following the steps but no result

  • I have had the same issue on my brand new Epix Pro Gen 2. I updated the maps using my PC (also installed Europe Topo maps) and even though it was all up to date the watch kept telling me the maps were queued and needed updating. This forum helped me resolve it but I did have to add a couple of steps:

    • Connect watch to PC
    • Use file explorer to locate and delete “GarminDevice.xml” file.
    • Remove watch and turn off then on again.

Now at this point my watch still had maps queued so I did the following:

    • Reconnected the watch to my PC which said there were items waiting to install.
    • Click on install and it took less than 1 minute to finish what it was doing and a sync.
    • Disconnect from PC and check the onboard maps.  All now showing up to date and no longer queuing.
