Will there be new updates for us? (Epix Gen 2 Users who purchased the watch in 2022)

Hi there!

I'm genuinely worried folks. Now that GARMIN has literally killed the Epix series, I wonder if we will get any new cool updates related to firmware. I'm aware that we will NOT be getting the new UI, but at least I hope we can get some new features, right? I'm not planning to upgrade my watch as it's still a high end functioning watch. I'd like to make the most of my investment for a couple of years more.

How about you?

Are you on the same page with me? or you're all gonna splash out on the brand new FENIX 8?

Lemme know your thoughts!

Regards,

Fred

  • Garmin didn't kill the Epix line, they just renamed it to Fenix Amoled. And considering how many people have asked "Where's the amoled Fenix?" (and not realized that Epix is that), it was probably a good choice.

I'm sure firmware updates continue on Epix. But if the codebase of Fenix 8 is different than old models, it's difficult to say which new features (which there are not many in Fenix 8) will be backported. The same happened to my old Fenix 5+ when Fenix 6 was introduced. Some features trickled down, most didn't.

The worth of your "investment" is whether the watch does what you bought it to do. That probably hasn't changed just because Fenix 8 was introduced?

  • The funny thing is that the epic pro gen 2, which is a watch that has been on the market for a year and 4 months realistically just lost support.
Garmin will never admit it, but the fact that the last update was 2.5 months ago speaks for itself. From now on we will only get simple fixes (the last beta updates show this, zero new features in them).

We can practically forget about the introduction of ECG already. We paid in Europe for a feature we will never get :(

It would be good to bring together people like us who have been duped and take Garmin to court.

  • Garmin uses a quarterly schedule for firmware updates, so if the previous was 2.5 months ago, it's just business as usual, the next one will appear in a couple of weeks. And in my experience it's typical that some updates contain new things, some are just maintenance updates.

And (related to another post) I'm kind of surprised about the idea of wanting to take Garmin to court because they might not provide additional features that were never promised or mentioned in the first place when the watch was announced. You might be disappointed because Garmin didn't meet (or might not meet) YOUR expectations, but that tells about what you've expected, not what Garmin has promised.

Did Garmin ever advertised ECG function in EUROPE??
Could you show me any Garmin Europe web page mentioning ECG??

That’s up to the European legislators. The technology is there with the gen5 series. If you search the internet you can find the workaround to get it working anywhere in the world.

It's actually irrelevant. What do you realistically need an ECG for? I have ECG capability on my Apple Watch Ultra. I used it twice and said 'Wow, look what it can do!' Never used it again. Finally, if your life depends on needing an ECG use something other than the crappy HR sensor on Garmin devices.

  • I have and Epix Pro that identified an issue with a very low heart beat, I bought an Apple Watch Ultra for the ECG and heart monitoring functions. The ECG on the Apple watch identified an issue with my heart (an extra beat) which is now being monitored and medicated by a cardio doctor/consultant...so it is worthwhile!

Also, the ECG on an Apple watch is noted as being 99% accurate and as mine heart was checked by a 12 lead ECG and 24 hour monitoring from the doctors, was found to be accurate.

If it had not been for these two watches, I would not be aware of the problem!
