Will the Epix series get an UI update to the fenix 8 style?

Just watched a review on the Fenix 8 and love the new UI style. Will the Epix pro get an update to that UI style?

  • From the DCRainmaker review: „And unfortunately for Fenix 7 owners, none of the new UI pieces/features are going back to previous watches“

I feel like that's actually good news, I'm not really a fan of most of the UI changes I've seen in the review videos.

  • I agree. Especially as they seem to be more cosmetic than anything else.

  • I'm particularly not a fan of how they scrambled things up in the activities. Starting an activity, configuring it, and browsing the datascreens seems unnecessarily way more complicated now than it used to be

  • I mostly see it as unnecessary unless your use-case has changed. I have the Epix Gen 2 Pro Sapphire, and I cannot imagine how the new features (mic, speaker, and changed UI) would compel me to "upgrade." In my specific case, I rarely interact with my smartwatches via voice. I prefer deliberately pressing buttons or selecting items from the screen. I'm also not a diver and do not require the diving feature. I think that - maybe - I may like whatever the strength training functionality might be. But I have no idea what it is, nor what exactly it does, so I am not missing it. The Epix Gen 2 Pro Sapphire is truly a wonderful Garmin product even now.

  • Yes, and with that said Garmin will not spent a cent on any software developments, improvements or bug solutions for the old watches from now on.

They won't work with two development environments.

    R.I.P: Epix/ Epix Pro / Fenix 7/ Fenix 7 Pro

Game over for everyone who hoped that Garmin would still work on any improvements or bugfixes for the old watches. Sad but true, I have my Epix Pro since February, spent 800 € and it never worked as it should because of all the bugs in the software. Now, half a year later nothing happened from Garmin for bugfixes and the new software for Fenix 8 means that they won't do anything to improve it.

The new customers can only hope that their software development is more professional now, if not, good night Fenix 8.

  • Nope. They won’t update the older watches (Apple does…). But to be honest the current interface is fine for me. I do really really hope Garmin will continue to update/upgrade the older watches.
Edit: i mean support for the watch, mostly bugfixes. I don’t need a new UI.

  • My Epix Pro sapphire has been perfect in the 9 months I’ve been using it, no complaints at all and of all the Garmins I’ve owned (starting from the 910XT many moons ago), it’s easily my favourite (in terms of functionality, stability and durability).

Will set auto-updates to off and continue in my little Epix bubble until there’s something that convinces me I need to upgrade.

  • Damn Garmin $1500 for a tactix amoled a year ago and no UI upgrade?!? That’s a real kick in the nuts. At least let the most recent models get those updates. Bastards.

  • I don't believe that garmin will invest a lot in changes, might be they will try solve the worst bugs like the Optical HR issues which came with an update and destroyed the whole analysis metrics for me.

I have read a lot about Garmins bad software development politics and bad habits which seem one of the main reasons of current software issues to me.

If they did it the right way they would have changed nearly everything for the software development of the Fenix 8. And then, there won't be any ports from Fenix 8 to Epix Pro or Fenix 7. It's just economically weird to let their software team work on two totally different software kits. So, from an economical point the only useful decision is to let the old watches die (from a point of software view).

  • No.  Different code base and not compatible.  Garmin confirmed this via DC Rainmaker.
