Epix Pro System Software 17.28 WIFI FREEZE

What seems to be broken

I've seen a few threads for 17.23 freezing up when connecting to WIFI but for support's sake, I thought it might be a good idea to get any/all of the users on 17.28 who are also experiencing this problem.

The long and the short of it is that any time I attempt connect to WiFi for any reason, the watch freezes up and has to be reset. This includes activities like: checking for software updates, saving an activity, and downloading music.

What I've done to fix it

Back in July I reached out to support for help with this issue first on phone and then by email. I spent hours resetting my watch, reinstalling, and making and uploading videos for support. After I did all of that, I reported the issue was still present and I got no response back.

Today after weeks of silence I called support and they asked me to enroll in the beta program. Today I've spent hours, have tried out multiple garmin branded cables, downloaded and synced with Garmin Express, but I can't access the garmin folder on the device so I can't sideload the beta. Hopefully I can get this resolved soon.

Is every Epix Gen 2 user on 17.28 dealing with this same issue?

The beta version can only downloaded by wifi. How can you join beta, when wifi causes the freeze?

I downgraded from 18.10 to 17.28 because of a problem with maps. Then I got also a wifi problem. No freeze, but a red circle and message that the connection to wifi failed. After deleting the connect app from the phone, and reinstalling, the watch connects to wifi again.

They have an option for side loading. If you’re on a Mac, the directions are outdated. You enroll in the beta then copy an update file over to the device. I’m a little murky about what actually triggered the device to update or what the correct folder to put it in was because I had to try a few different things.

I think if you wanna join beta, you can reach out Support and they’ll get you hooked up

Hello. I am sorry to hear you are having this issue. Our engineers are aware of an issue causing freezing when using WiFi with the latest SW version 17.28. This has been resolved with the BETA software version 18.09 and later. If desired, you can join the BETA program to resolve this. Thanks I have joined BETA and installed beta version 18.12. Seems that freeze issue now has been resolved

Just as an extra information, you can download the beta versions also through the phone(see screenshots).

You have also the option of Garmin Express when you connect the watch to the computer.

On windows, i don't need to access the folder for the beta updates. Garmin express will let you know if you have updates and you just install it like a normal update.

(copying the file manually was the old method that has been replaced more than few months ago).

Update September 17, 2024:

Our engineers have indicated this has since been resolved with the latest Software version 18.14. If you are experiencing this concern, and have not already, you can install this update using Garmin Express.
