Do Not Disturb mode behavior - Would like input form other people

Hello everyone. I have already sent this as a suggestion to Garmin but would like to hear from other people as well about this. I actually own a Descent Mk3i and not an Epix, but seeing as the software is identical and many more people use an Epix I thought I'd ask here.

So, currently all the DnD mode does is silence vibration and audio. The notifications still pop up on the screen. Is it me or is this not wanted behavior? Shouldn't notifications be blocked entirely instead of just muting the vibration/audio?

I get into meetings where I don't want to be disturbed and I enable DnD. As I'm talking, people keep looking at my watch and getting distracted. I notice that and look at it as well and see that either someone sent me a message, or I'm getting a call. This is really counterintuitive for a "do not disturb" mode as it really does disturb.

To alleviate this, I started disconnecting my watch entirely from my phone. Which is not a great way of doing things and leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Phones have separate "Silent" and "DnD" modes for a reason. On Garmins the DND mode acts as a silent mode.

What are your thoughts on this? Shouldn't there at least be a setting to completely disable all notifications?

  • 100% agree, notifications should also be disabled.

I think that if you posted here "ready to copy" what you reported to Garmin as a suggestion, many people would also send it (now few people want to write what it's about).

Garmin should create a website where the submitted ideas are public and where you can simply vote for them...

  • Good idea, unfortunately I didn't keep a copy of my report and Garmin did not send me a copy on my email :(

  • I  could answer you as Descent MK3i user and previously Fenix 7X user.
When I enable on my watch DnD all notifications gone.
My phone is iPhone with latest iOS.

Did you check DnD setting on your watch?
There are couple setting to set and one of it is Notifications from the phone.

  • Interesting. Do you use AOD? Might be specifically related to that.

I use AOD so my screen is on at all times. Enabling DnD does not disable the notifications from showing up on the screen.

I am on android but I doubt this is related.

My current DnD settings on my watch are:

    • Always On Display: Don't Change
    • Smart Notifications: Off
    • Alerts: Off
    • Wrist Gesture: Don't Change
    • Orange Shift: Don't Change
  • No, I'm not using ADO.

My DnD settings looks same like yours.

  • How is your DND set up? As it can be edited to all through notifications etc. i.e. if notofications are set as do not change it and general activity is set to allow them, then DND will allow them - that setitng needs to be off.

Personally have never had an issue with my DND - but then its usually toggeled to go with sleep tracking which is also toggeled to start battery saver which also has everthing off except for HR - so DND technically moot as battery saver already taken care of all of that.

What you could do is use the Display off / cinema mode option - when toggeled it will turn off your screen (whether AOD on or off) and will keep the screen off for anything other than a button press or screen touch - so notifications will vibrate - letting you know you have one - but no screen waking up to show you it. Wrist gestures are also turned off so no screen waking up if AOD off, and no screens brightening if AOD on.

You can set it to a hotkey - Display (that is the option you want).

Or you can access from control menu - long press light button (left top) - look for icon that ia  watch with a slash through it - when its grey it means this setting is off (i.e. display is turned on) - pressing it will change the icon to greeen (and state in the middle display is off) - when you exit the control menu and screen times out - or your press the light button to turn off the screen it will now not light up until screen is touched or button pressed.

  • Hmmm. Then it might actually be a bug? Could you check with AOD on to see if you can replicate my issue?

  • My DnD is set to block all notifications. Apparently it might have to do with having AOD on. But I'd really hate it if I have to turn my screen off as well. I like my watch to look as a time piece and not like a turned off screen.

  • You are right.
I've just check it and with AOD enabled with DnD enabled notification appear on the watch.

  • Thanks for confirming. I should probably report is as a bug then. I thought it was like that by design.
