Outdoor Maps Plus on Epix 2 Pro experience?

Can anyone provide feedback regarding their experience with Outdoor Maps Plus on Epix 2 Pro?

Firstly regarding performance: it is noticeably laggier than the standard mapping, and does the additional information works with the screen-size?

Secondly, if used in the EU’s mountainous areas is the additional detail is worth the subscription? (I know it varies country to country, so specifically my focus is the Bavarian Alps.)

I remember that a couple of years ago, and outside the US, the only feature offered was a satellite overlay, and I’m hoping things have improved!

Thanks for your advice!

  • I don't have the Pro, just the first Epix 2 version.  But on that, it was horribly slow.  Unusable really with the time it would take to draw the maps on the screen.  I emailed support and asked for a refund, and they obliged. I  think the processor is the same on the Pro and first version.  I really hope the next Epix (or whatever it's called) increases the processor speed.  The Maps+ is cool/great, but unusable for me.

  • Don't have an Epix Pro so can't comment on the experience of using the Outdoor Maps+ maps on this device. But I do have experience with Outdoor Maps+ in Europe on other Garmin devices.

Outdoor Maps+ has received Europe coverage since april this year. The Europe maps are the same as the TOPO Pro maps you can (still) buy individually. The main difference with those maps is that the data is split in several layers which you can toggle individually, for example buildings, DEM data, topo, etc.

I find the maps more detailed than the default Topo Active maps. And for 50 euro per year I think it is a better deal than buying the maps individually, especially if you visit multiple countries within Europe. But then again there are a lot of free 3rd party map options available based on Openstreetmap...

  • With the HD shading and the building layers, which are included in the outdoor maps plus subscription,  the topo active maps look much nicer. The Outdoor maps plus map looks beautiful, has more contour lines, but don't have trails. Just like printed topo maps, which also don't have trails. The graphic is not rough like printed maps, but rendered with thin lines.

For hiking in the country side or mountains i would recommend the topo active maps with the additional layers from maps plus. In urban areas the maps plus map is better. Topoactive maps show much to much "points of interest". In the maps plus map the real poi are better visible.

Without the HD mountain shading, there is no notable lagging.
