Garmin needs to really look into this
Then you need to contact Garmin Support. Have you?
Hello 7760970
I am very sorry to hear you were not able to sync this. Unfortunately, if the file is now missing from the watch history as well, it is not possible to recover this. If you had the .fit file for the activity still listed in the watch, you could try manually syncing the activity. Without access to the file on the watch, there is not another place this would be located to recover it.
Hi Garmin-Laurie,
It's great to hear that hearing the file and activity was on the watch, and it was fully functional, then a day later it's out of a sudden poof, gone... It's normal for you... It's great to hear that it seems to be normal issue you don't even bother to care. It's great to hear to it's so fine for you that you don't even bother to investigate the problem. Or raise it anywhere, try to fix it.
But let's start with couple of questions:
- How do you know the file is gone?
- Why the file is gone?

Again, I am very sorry to hear this occurred. While not so normal as to be expected, corrupted files can occur.
To address your questions:
Why the file is gone? In some cases this can be avoided by syncing regularly, and deleting older activities stored from the watch. Other times, this may be entirely random due to, for example, a shut down of the device during the activity. If this is the only time you experience this, there really will not be a way to for us to tell you for sure the cause.
However, if this is something that is happening repeatedly, this can indicate a larger software problem with the watch. I truly hope this is only a one off (while still devastating) , not something ongoing.
How do you know the file is gone? I did not ask this, as you had already mentioned that this was not appearing in the Connect account after the sync or the watch itself. But just to be sure, on your watch: Hold the menu button, select History, then Activities. See if you are able to locate the file.
If it is present, you can try using these steps to import the file: How Do I Manually Upload an Activity I Recorded to Garmin Connect?
If this is not listed in the watch history, there is nowhere else this will appear for you to recover this, unfortunately.
I'm pretty sure it's the same thing that happened to me on several occasions. When you are in an activity and put it in the background, when you return to it the track disappears from the map and when you save it you can see all the information about the activity except the route you followed. The activity never syncs with Garmin Connect and when you perform a new activity on the watch it disappears. Luckily it can be recovered from the computer since the .fit file remains in a temporary folder. There is a way to solve the problem before saving the activity, go to the map settings and change the map theme (for example to high contrast) and the track appears again. Garmin should correct a problem this important.
When you are in an activity and put it in the background,
Would you explain what you mean by this?
I understand corrupted files can occur. Same as some sync issues. Yet, the activity was there. Saved, browsable from the watch, I opened it on the watch on Monday. What means, the file was there. readable, properly saved.
The watch didn't shut down during the activity, It was synced regularly, as I mentioned before other intermediate data is there; steps, calories, recovery time. And it has 16GB of free memory.
If the file would be still on the watch, but not in the app I would understand, if it would not save after activity I would understand. If the watch would shut down during activity and it would be gone... I would understand.
I don't understand how file can disappear after clearly being there.
What is the most concerning here is your approach, not the problem itself. Whole files are disappearing and you are ok with it. 'Yep it is this way, day like any other'.
Another question:
How I can make the watch to appear in the PC operating system as a regular external drive? During MTP it appears as external device with internal memory; browsable from file explorer, but not browsable as a drive(without assigned drive letter).
This is a blocker for file recovery software.
„What is the most concerning here is your approach, not the problem itself. Whole files are disappearing and you are ok with it. 'Yep it is this way, day like any other'.“
Your passive-aggressive tone towards somebody who tries to help you is the only concerning thing in this thread.
Garmin-Laurie still waiting for an answer.
The file was there. Saved, browsable with all the data visible and accessible. Just not sent online.
As I understand this is an official Garmin statement that you are fully aware that files are dropping like flies from the devices. This is a standard feature of your devices and software, and because of that, you are unwilling to even investigate why. Not mentioning fix it. Correct Garmin-Laurie?
