Today's suggestion missing step

Hi,

My daily suggestions run workouts that have intervals are always missing the final "Recovery" step.

eg. Here is the suggested workout:

  1. Warm Up 10:00 min. @ 6:55/km
  2. Run 16:00 min. @ 5:25/km
  3. Recover 5 min. @ 7:55/km
  4. Repeat 2 & 3 twice
  5. Cool Down 10:00 min. @ 6:55/km

So what happens is this:

  1. Warm up
  2. Run
  3. Recover
  4. Run
  5. Cool Down

Every time I have a today's suggested workout with intervals, it always deletes the last "Recovery" step.

The reason this bugs me so much is that I try to plan my course strategically placing elevation inclines/declines and to finish this workout within the time and distance.  Also, I really look forward to this recovery to continue my workout and it cuts my workout short by about 1km.

Anyone else have this problem???

  • That's the way repetition in daily suggested workouts work (almost certainly on purpose), and I personally don't see it as a problem, as the last recovery is followed by a cool down anyway. And even for you, since you know how it works, you can count the last recovery step one time less than the actual workout step, right?

  • always missing the final "Recovery" step.

    Cool down is recovery

  • I know how it works now, after 3 of these types of workouts. Still not the way Garmin has planned/programmed it to work.

  • If they are equal, then why have them both?

As far as the program is concerned, in this case the pace is different therefore it is clear that they are not the same.

  • Why do you think Garmin hasn't planned it the way it works now? In fact, I'm almost sure they have planned to have only the workout step in the last repetition, it actually requires more coding to make it work the way it does.

What I think Garmin has done is to be unable to have a concise description of the workout (suitable for the watch display) which would still 100 % pedantically describe that the last repetition ends without recovery. I mean, I don't know how to describe that briefly enough myself. Should it have "* the last repetition doesn't contain recovery", or should they describe 3 repetitions as "Run 10 min, Recovery 2 min, repeat last 2 steps 2 times, Run 10 min"? That's confusing to most people, me included.

Maybe Garmin has just trusted people to be smart enough to realize how repetitions work after doing one workout...

By the way, interval workouts created in the watch behave exactly the same way. User-created workouts in Garmin Connect repeat all steps, because there the last step isn't necessarily a recovery.

  • In my case, I prefer having that second recovery at 7:55/km and then my Cool Down at 6:55/km.  Must be my linear way of thinking.

Also, was wondering if anyone else notices this slight discrepancy.

Thanks for your description of how you think Garmin has it figured out.

  • It was always like that so i never thought about a missing step.

For me it's something like "I'm done with the hard work so i don't need an extra Recovery step as i'm going to do 10 minutes of Cooldown".
