Epix (gen 2) incorrect elevation

I’m getting incorrect elevation gain figures, usually by a factor of 3, from my Epix.   This seems to be an intermittent issue, but happening more and more often.

i can enable ‘elevation corrections’ on the activity in the web version of connect, but can’t find a way of permanently enabling this setting.

I’ve tried soaking the watch in water for a few minutes as suggested in documents I found on-line, but with no change.   The sensor port is clear from what I can see.

Sensor mode is set to ‘auto’ and ‘auto cal’ is turned on.

Anyone got any suggestions to either get the Watch working properly, or have it ignore the sensor data and use elevation data from the maps?

cheers

  • Hello

I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with the elevation. Since you have tried cleaning the sensor, there are a couple other things to look for.

    • If you navigate to to the altimeter port, does this show correct elevation in the moment? If not, have you tried calibrating the altimeter manually?
    • When calibrate, how long after does this remain correct? Usually a manual calibration will bring the elevation to within +/-25 ft. for up to an hour.
    • If this is now holding a calibration for this long, or is not calibrating successfully, I would recommend completing a full factory reset.

  • Tried all that - still getting inconsistant elevation readings - tried a comparison with my old FR945, that's rock stable whereas the Epix drifts either way by 50-100 metres and then recovers back to more or less the correct elevation (give or take a few 10's of feet).

Is there anyway of enabling elevation corrections by default in Garmin Connect?   I'm close to calling the Epix an expensive and pretty ornament and going back to my old FR.
