gps comparison between epix2 and venu3

I have made several GPS comparisons between the venu3 and the epix2 and am disappointed with the GPS on the epix2.

Both devices have the best possible GPS settings and have activated data recording every second. The sky was also cloudless.

In some places the GPS on the epix2 jumps back and forth while the GPS on the venu3 records the route correctly. Below are two examples. Garmin, please improve the GPS on the epix2.

  • Epix could be so much better here. This was a GPSMAP 67, the gps is on a different level on this, though.

There is no comparison. The watch is much smaller and is worn on the wrist. These are just not the optimum conditions for a small receiver. In addition, the user has not written which GPS systems she has activated.

The GPSmap has a much better antenna.
In my opinion, comparing a watch with a handheld device is not successful.

GPS drift at stationary is very arbitrary and depends on many factors. One of the biggest interference factors with GPS are differences in signal transit time due to atmospheric interference.

There are also trees that attenuate the signal and buildings that block or reflect the signal. Water can also reflect the signal and thus distort it.

  • To clarify once again, the problem that the thread creator has is NOT  due GPS in my opinion, but is apparently due to the activated "lock on road" setting.

In contrast to the GPS drift, which is very arbitrary, the screenshot of the thread creator clearly shows that there are clear connections to the roads that the watch is trying to lock on.

  • Let me add to this how a gps drift looks like with a _proper_ gps device:
I've spent ~15 minutes here, so yes, Epix could be so much better here. This was a GPSMAP 67, the gps is on a different level on this, though.

I did a little "GPS drift" test today.

    Devices :

    tactix 7 pro
    GPSmap 65s
    EtrexSE

All 3 devices were stationary and next to each other for 1.5 hours (!!)

Note the scale in the screenshot of the Explore app.The scale is 90 meters =295 feet

You can also see a railroad track on the left side of the picture for size comparison.

Note how close together all three track lines are.

All devices were in the best mode and without auto pause.

I would like to point out that although I do not own an Epix myself, the tactix 7 is basically identical and has the same GPS chipset as the Epix gen2.

Personally, I find this comparison of the tactix with the handheld devices very impressive and I can't find any outliers.

Epix could be so much better here.

I do not agree with that.

It is quite clear that the handheld devices really come into place as soon as the GPS reception conditions get worse. Forests etc. Then they have a clear advantage over the small watches.

This is clearly due to technical reasons.

  • Turning off the "lock on road" setting helped. Now the gps works as expected. Thank you.
