Should I, shouldn't I?

Just about to press 'buy' on a epix gen 2 and found all the one star reviews on the app store. Which led me to your forum. Should I be reconsidering a purchase? Gorgeous watch, yet so many unhappy app users. Garmin must respond no?

  • It's easier to complain in forums rather than praise the good aspects of a product. Epix is a gorgeous device and I'm really happy: when it works at its best, it's really amazing. That said, Garmin tends to add a lot of functionalities very often and regressions are pretty common. I found several bugs by myself using just a fraction of all functionalities and a couple of them drove me crazy Smiley. If you are a perfectionist and you can't live with this then avoid the purchase. Otherwise go for it, you won't regret.

  • Garmin Connect App - 1 star reviews.

Garmin has just tweaked the front page of their app (was called My Day - is now called Home) and they are getting very mixed reviews about it. But then prior to the change most people complained about how old school it looked. Sometimes you just can't win. Just remember that most of those 1 star reviews aren't about it working - its about its look and feel.

Personally I think there are some really great things about the change, and I personally do not miss the old layout. I do think that there is still quite a lot they can do to improve the new layout - and hopefully they will at some point. One of my favourite bits about the new layout is that it gives me the detail I need on the Home page and I seldom have to go into the widgets to get the detail I want (like I had to with My Day which didn't have the same level of detail on the widgets).

If you look at DesFit or DC Rainmaker channels they have both put out reviews/commentary about the changes - if you want to take a better look at how the new layout works.

  • The thing is that Garmin watch, its sensors and the whole garmin connect are bad in many ways. You can find those in this forumns.

However, there is a reason, why so many people comes back from apple and other devices to Garmin. Including me, who have a Garmin Epix pro, currently on sale, still wearing, because... I love it. The ecosystem and the garmin connect's functionality is just so unique and coherent, you won't find it elsewhere.

Hopefully they fix all the issues they came up with at the latest update.

  • If you plan to use it for swimming or surfing, no. There were too many failures of Fenix 7 and Epix watches after using them in water. If you use it for running, I suggest do not buy it before HR and watch restarting issues are fixed (you can see from posts what it is about).

  • That is a weird recommendation. I have neither HR issues, nor watch restarting issues. I use it for running, cycling and skiing. The watch has been instrumental in improving my physical condition tremendously. The functionality is superb, and I am benefiting a lot from the training programs. Furthermore, I use the explore app quite a bit to plan routes whenever I am traveling. And my watch then provides the directions when running. simply amazing.

    I recommend to buy asap!

  • Simple search for "buttons" on epix and fenix 7 forum will show you what I am talking about

  • If you use it for running, I suggest do not buy it before HR and watch restarting issues are fixed (you can see from posts what it is about).

What a comment!!! I am running literally everyday with an epix 2 since the official release! No problem with buttons, none for 2 years. Restarting issues, again, none for the same period! The same goes for the HR, not a single problem! The watch works like a charm.  Did I mention that any issue that you have is covered by a warranty and Garmin deal with everything in a perfect way with great customer service and communication!

  • Good for you. If you did that simple search, you would see that many people had their watch fail after using them in water. Not only thst, but replwcement waches they received failed as well. You see it however you want, but OP asked and I answered why OP should consider aforementioned fact if he plans to use watch in water. Regarding customer support, sometimes it is great, sometimes it is not. It also depends on country you are from. Also something to keep in mind.

  • Just got an Epix Pro(Gen 2) 51 mm. I don't regret switching from the Fenix 7x Sapphire solar 51mm at all. The screen is something else and the battery life is 31 days.

  • 95% of time, I'm interact with watch only.

In that 5% of time, when I do look at my data, 3/4 of time I use web version and 1/4 of time I use phone app.  It is just faster for me to use the web version.  And easier to see all the data.  With that limited usage, I don't have any issue with the phone app.  The latest app had a change in look, so it's really personal preference if people prefer older format versus new format.  Since you don't have experience with old format, it is moot anyways.

On the phone, there are 2 apps.  Garmin Connect that has data and settings.  And Connect IQ that is for installing watch face, apps, widgets/glances.  I do encounter connection/sync issues intermittently with both apps.

Garmin Connect: Sometimes Garmin Connect will not download data from the watch, unless I actively use the app. When this happens, it is poor user experience, but not a showstopper.  Just need to open app, click sync once or twice.

Connect IQ: sometimes (maybe often, like 25% of time), the app is completely out of sync with the watch.  For instance, I install a watch face.  Watch face is installed on the watch, but Connect IQ shows not installed.  And sometimes, Connect IQ will show nothing is installed on the watch.  Need to kill the app; go to Garmin Connect and sync multiple times; sometimes need to reboot phone.  When issue occurs, it is really a pain.  It can take up to 5 minutes of messing around to get Connect IQ to work.  Another issue is bugs.  I try to uninstall watch face A, but then watch face B is uninstalled.  I have no idea how this happens, but it has happened to me 3 times in past month.  The only saving grace is that I don't use Connect IQ often.  Maybe only handful of times each month.
